Sviedek advances to semifinals after thriller match against Kanepi
For about three hours, Sviedek and Kanepi put up a great fight against Poland, winning 2-1 sets and qualifying for the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
His tennis friends Iga Swiodet (No. 7) and Kaya Kanepi (No. 115) offered a terrible match in terms of variation. The one who ended up smiling was Poland, who prevailed in sets 2-1 and qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
The match was a derby from the start, with Kanepi confirming his excellent form. Estonia had a hard time making it to No. 7 in the world rankings and after erasing four break points finally managed to break his opponent’s serve and lead 4-3.
She then held on to take a 5-3 lead and could have closed the set in the next game, but Svijdek cleared her opponent’s four set points. Eventually, Kanepi managed to lead 6-4 in the next game.
We had an even bigger fight in the second set. Estonia started with a break, after which Sviedek went on to win the next four games with two breaks. Kanepi didn’t give up, bringing the set to a tie and leading it to the tie break. Poland was calmer there, winning the set and sending the match into a third set.
With better psychology, Sviodek started the third set with a break. Estonia seemed to run out of strength and despite struggling to get back into the match, they eventually finished ranked No. 7 in the world, winning the third set 6-3 and meeting Collins in the second semifinal.
