The big time of the Australian Open semifinals

Rafael Nadal meets Matteo Beretini at 05:30 at Rod Laver Arena, while Stefanos Tsitsipas meets Rafael Nadal at 10:30.

Friday (28/1) looks set to be an exciting day for the Australian Open as the two men’s semi-finals will be played where the top 4 of the tournament will battle it out for a place in Sunday’s grand final.

Appointment with the story about Stefanos

Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 4), who had an excellent run at this year’s Australian Open, meets Daniel Medvedev (No. 2) for a place in the final at 10.30 a.m. (Eurosport 1 and LIVE on Sportish) at Rod Laver at the earliest Arena und Wille is the second semi-final of the day.

The Greek champions are chasing their first qualification for a final at the Australian Open and second overall at a Grand Slam in a repeat of last year’s semifinal against No. 2 Medvedev. The two tennis players have met eight times in the past, most recently in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros 2021, where Tsitsipas won 3-0.

Stefanos comes off an amazing performance and a 3-0 win over the talented Yannick Sinner, while Medvedev had to ‘sweat’ against Felix Ozer Aliasim, beating him 3-2 after a reversal in a match that lasted almost 5 hours. !

In the dream of 21 Rafa

Mateo Beretini (No. 7) will be the next hurdle for Rafa Nadal (No. 5) to overcome on his way into history and the 21st Grand Slam of his career. The two tennis players will not meet before 5:30 a.m at Rod Laver Arena in the first semi-final of the day.

The Spaniard has surpassed this year’s Australian Open as he put on amazing performances after an injury-related 5-month absence from games, reaching the semi-finals and keeping alive hopes of winning a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam. On the other hand, Mateo Beretini has another great course in Slam, reaching his 3rd semi-final and will follow his presence in the 2nd final of Slam in his career. The pair have met before at the 2019 US Open where Rafa clinched the win 3-0.

Nadal comes off a difficult and challenging 3-2 win over Denis Sapovalov. Matteo Beretini’s victory was also very difficult, overcoming Gael Monfis’ obstacle with 3-2.

Mixed doubles final

The Rod Laver Arena program will open with the final doubles final, in which the duo of Ivan Dodig / Kristina Mladenovic will meet Jason Kumbler / Jamie Fourlis. The game takes place at 03:00.

VIDEO. Wawrinka played his last match at the Aus Open and had a beer with the director

40-year-old Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka (ATR 139) played the last match of his career at the Australian Open.

In the 1/16 major final on January 24, the Swiss lost to the world’s ninth ranked Taylor Fritz of the USA in four sets in 2 hours 45 minutes.

Wawrinka managed to outperform Laszlo Gyore and Arthur Hea in Melbourne. He spent a total of 10 hours and 24 minutes on the field over the course of three fights. Stan will end his professional career in 2026.

After the meeting ended, Wawrinka, who brought two cans of beer with him during his farewell speech, shared his last minutes on the field with Australian Open director Craig Tiley.

“This was my last time on the court as a player. I’ve gone through so many emotions over these 20 years, all thanks to you. It’s been an incredible journey. I won my first Grand Slam here. I’ve always loved coming back here, I’ve always felt supported. It’s largely thanks to you that I’ve continued to play for so long – because of the love and emotions you’ve given me. I’m sorry to leave, but it’s been a truly wonderful journey. I’ve seen how much you love tennis all these years, how you support us, how you know how to enjoy the moment. Now “It’s my turn, so I’d like to have a beer with Craig if you don’t mind.”

Wawrinka won the Australian Open cup in 2014. He has 45 wins and 19 losses on Melbourne courts.

Australian Open Sabalenka eliminates Victoria Mboko and returns to the quarters

(Melbourne) World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka dismissed young Canadian Victoria Mboko (16e at 19) 6-1, 7-6 (7/1) Sunday in 8are final of the Australian Open where she will return to the quarter-finals for the fourth time in a row.

“So young, she is incredibly strong so I am very happy to have won in two rounds,” commented the 27-year-old Belarusian, double winner in Melbourne (2023, 2024) and finalist last year.

She will face Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (94) on Tuesday.e) or the American Iva Jovic (27e) to try to find the last square.

Revelation of last year with his title at the WTA 1000 in Montreal, Mboko participated in his first Australian Open. She achieved her best Grand Slam run to date, after her debut in Majors last year. She lost in the third round at Roland Garros, the second at Wimbledon and the first at the US Open.

On Sunday, Mboko played with his right leg still wrapped in a huge bandage running from mid-thigh to mid-calf to protect his knee.

After missing two break points in the first game of the match, the Canadian then seemed completely helpless.

But, trailing 4-1 in the second set, she took advantage of a bad game from Sabalenka to steal her serve and then return to 4-3.

Sabalenka served for the match at 5-4 but failed to convert any of her first three match points, letting Mboko return to 5-5.

In the tiebreaker, however, Sabalenka immediately broke away 6/0 and concluded on her fifth match point.

“It’s in the head and we always have to play the best we can even if it’s not our best level,” stressed the Belarusian.

She has already won four Grand Slam tournaments with, in addition to her two Australian trophies, the US Open 2024 and 2025.

She will play her 13e consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals since her third-round elimination at Roland Garros in 2021 (she did not participate in Wimbledon in 2022 or 2024).

Mboko, however, fought well in the second round. She hit three aces and won 57% of points played on her first serve, two statistics identical to Sabalenka. The latter, however, was dominant in the tiebreaker, taking a 6-0 lead before winning 7-1.

The number one player in the world finished the duel with 31 winning shots and 24 unforced errors, compared to 19 winning shots and 20 unforced errors for Mboko, who could join the top 15 world at the conclusion of this Grand Slam tournament.

“What an incredible player for her age! exclaimed Sabalenka, 27, about the Canadian. It’s incredible to see these young people break through on the circuit. I find it hard to believe it. I feel like I’m still a child. »

“She pushed me so hard, and I’m glad it’s over,” Sabalenka added during her on-court interview.

The Belarusian also won a 20e consecutive tiebreaker.

“I try not to think about a tiebreaker and play point by point, and I think that’s the key to consistency,” she said.

Sabalenka won this Grand Slam tournament in 2023 and 2024 and was finalist last year against Madison Keys. She also won two U.S. Open titles.

Mboko reached this stage of the competition thanks to a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 victory against Danish Clara Tauson, 14e seeded, in the third round.

In women’s doubles, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazilian Luisa Stefani defeated American Nicole Melichar and Spaniard Cristina Bucșa 6-4, 6-3 in the third round.

Dabrowski and his partner, seeded fifth, won 61% of the points played on their first ball and especially 70% of the points played on their second serve.

In the quarterfinals, Dabrowski and Stefani will face the winners of the duel between Su-Wei Hsieh and Jeļena Ostapenko, third seeds, and Sofia Kenin and Laura Siegemund, 13are favorites.
