Former World No. 1 John McEnroe spoke honestly about the future of Roger Federer’s career and what he thinks the Swiss still has to offer in tennis.

Federer, 40, returned in March 2021 after a long absence but his injuries allowed him to play just 13 games last season. He said he wasn’t sure he could return before Wimbledon 2022.

It goes without saying that when Roger isn’t playing somewhere we miss him‘ McEnroe told Eurosport.

He’s the most aristocratic player with the most beautiful style I’ve ever seen on the pitch. As a fan I would love to see him again

As for the future, he is 40 years old. He’s had knee surgery a lot, he’s got a lot of wear and tear, it would be incredible if he could go back and get to the level he was at

I thought the same thing five years ago when I was coaching Milos Raonic and Roger was limping after the 2016 Wimbledon semi-final and then didn’t play for six months. Then he won the Australian Open in 2017

He’s done incredible things in the past but that would be the most amazing thing if he won another Wimbledon

What makes him happy is what he deserves. If he wants to play we’ll be happy he’s playing but I don’t want to see Roger 80%. We saw it with Murray and it’s not easy. We always want to see lace at its best“.

When asked who he thinks is the greatest player of all time, the American replied:

It depends on the surface. For me Rafa is the best player on the ground, Novak is the best on the hard court and I would say Roger the most accomplished player on the grass. But again Novak beat him three times at Wimbledon

Novak also has a positive record of wins against both. It’s a bit ahead but in a weird way I’m hoping everyone gets the same number so we can have this debate 10 years from now and it’s just a matter of opinion and no one will prevailSaid McEnroe.
