Kokkinakis and Kyrgios lifted it in Australian Open doubles

With a 2-0 set win over Emden and Poursel, the emigrant tennis players Thanasis Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios won the doubles title at the Australian Open.

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasis Kokkinakis were crowned doubles champions at this year’s Australian Open.

The two Greek-Australians entered the event’s mainboard with a wild card and, after 14 days of dream performances, became the first duo in AO history to win the title in the competition with a free entry card.

In the final on Saturday, Australia’s Max Parsel and Matthew Ebden prevailed 7-5, 6-4 after 1 hour and 36 minutes, ideally ending the two great weeks they spent together in Melbourne.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis achieved six wins during that period, including defeating the No. 1, No. 3, No. 6 and No. 15 board duos. Nine years after winning the 2013 Wimbledon junior doubles title, the two climbers found their greatest success when they competed in front of their home crowd.

The two… “crazy” Greek-Australians played a perfect game in the final, winning 47/62 behind serve. In fact, they didn’t even let their opponents hit a breakpoint.

With just eight effortless errors, the victors finished the match, counted 2/6 break points and ended up celebrating with their souls their big win in the first Major of 2022. In fact, starting next Monday, both will enter the top 50 of the world doubles rankings. Kyrgios will peak at #40 while Kokkinakis will rise to #46.
