Kyrgios ended the derby with Medvedev with a goal
Nick Kyrgios won 2-0 sets against Sebastian Baez in the first round of the National Bank Open in Montreal and meets Daniil Medvedev in an exciting duel.
His 7th straight win and 13th in the last 14 games he has won on the tour was matched by Nick Kyrgios who continues his impressive performances in the tournaments of the Americas.
The 27-year-old Greek-Australian, fresh from winning the title in Washington last week, sped past Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-4 to reach the first round of the National Bank Open in Montreal, a win that propelled him to the top brings against the seed and world No. 1 in the 2nd round of the Masters event.
“I’ve never played great tennis in Montreal, so today I wanted to go out and finish the match against Medvedev. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. I just want to leave some good memories of Montreal.” said Kyrgios.
The No. 37 in the world rankings started the game very strongly and took a 5-1 lead. Although Baez tried to get back into the opening set, Kyrgios successfully served to take the lead. In the second set, after 1 hour and 25 minutes, a break was enough for the Greek-Australian to win and now the whole tennis world is waiting for the big derby with Medvedev, which takes place on Wednesday (8:00 p.m. GMT).
On the same side of the board, Grigor Dimitrov defeated wildcard Alexis Galarneau 6-4, 7-5 to face Alex De Minor in the second round after the Australian also clinched a 7-5, 7-6 win over Shapovalov ( 4 ).
