PARIS, France – A former No. 1 in the world of tennis, he revealed on Wednesday.
Winner of 20 Grand Slam tournaments, Federer has not played in any competition since losing in the quarterfinals of the last Wimbledon in July to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz and following knee surgery, his third in a year and a half.
“The coming months will be interesting and important for me. “I think I will learn a lot more by April-May,” he said during a teleconference hosted by one of his associates.
“I want to come back strong and give what I have,” the Swiss said on Wednesday. “The motivation is still there and I want to work,” Federer said.
Federer was ranked 30th in the world on Monday, while his place in the standings is no longer protected for medical reasons. He played just 13 games in 2021 and played just six in 2020 when he underwent two knee surgeries.
“I’ll be back to the gym tomorrow,” Federer said, having to train “slowly.” […] “I would like to do a lot more, but the doctors advise me to restrain myself a bit,” he added.
Federer also took the opportunity, as he did on Twitter on Sunday, to once again congratulate his great rival Rafael Nadal, winner of his 21st Grand Slam in Melbourne: “It was nice to see his feelings after this victory in “Look,” said the Swiss.
“Rafa told me he was not feeling well, but (on Sunday) he lifted the Australian Open trophy. “He’s really a good example for everyone,” Federer said. Nadal won the 21st Grand Slam trophy just months after undergoing leg surgery and contracting the coronavirus late last year as he began his return.
Federer’s last victory in the Grand Slam, his 20th, dates back to the 2018 Australian Open.
