Rotterdam open: Murray will play next to Medvedev

Daniel Medvedev withdraws from Rotterdam Open while Andy Murray will participate in wild card tournament

Australian Open finalist Daniel Medvedev has withdrawn from the Rotterdam 500-a-side tournament, which runs from February 7th to 13th.

The world No. 2, as he said, will prefer to rest after the course he had in the 1st Grand Slam of the season.

“Unfortunately I won’t play in Rotterdam this year,” said Medvedev. “I have just returned from Australia and am not ready to go back to court. “Rotterdam has always been one of my favorite stations and I look forward to returning in the future.”

The Russian has played at the Rotterdam indoor tournament four times in total, with his best place being in 2019 when he reached the semi-finals.

This development led to a change of position on the main board with Stefanos Tsitsipas in first place.

Medvedev aside, Rotterdam will not have Italian and world No. 10 Yannick Sinner as he has tested positive for Covid-19.

Medvedev is replaced by American Mackenzie MacDonald while Sinner is replaced by Dutchman Boutik van de Zanchulp.

Organizers announced all three of the four wildcards overall, with the first going to Andy Murray while the other two were won by Joe-Wilfried Tsonga and Talon Hrickspor.

Murray, who was recently without a coach, will take part in the tournament for the seventh time in his career, with his best moment being the title in 2009, when he defeated Rafa Nadal in the final.
