Former head coach of Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Andrei Voronkov again apologized to the Cuban volleyball player Ailama Montalvo for an inappropriate statement during the match, noting that he did not want to offend anyone with his words.
In May 2022, the executive committee of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VVF) disqualified Voronkov, then head of the Kaliningrad Lokomotiv, for two years for racist insulting the Cuban player Uralochka Montalvo. On Wednesday it became known that the second year of the coach’s disqualification was replaced with a conditional one, Voronkov could resume coaching in May.
– I want to assure you that I sincerely regret that my phrase, uttered in a personal conversation with a player of the team, whose coach I was at the time of the championship, in a very difficult game moment for us in the final match of the Russian championship, was perceived as an insult and a demonstration of disrespect to an opposing player. I am not a racist. I had no intention of offending any of the opposing volleyball players.
Therefore, I would like to once again offer a public apology to Ailame Montalvo.
During my long career as an athlete and coach, I have worked with foreign players many times, and our relationship has always been based on mutual trust and respect.

A doctor from the Yenisei volleyball club provided emergency assistance to a child on board the plane
The doctor of the men’s volleyball club “Yenisei” from Krasnoyarsk, Shakhriyar Mirzoev, provided emergency assistance to the boy on board the plane.
The incident happened during the New Year holidays on the Kazan-Krasnoyarsk flight. The specialist noticed that the man and child were in the toilet for 20 minutes, and the flight attendant came in there periodically.
“I approached and saw that a boy of about nine was standing at the sink filled with water and blood. At that moment, the flight attendant began to ask if there was a doctor on board, to which I replied: “I’m a doctor, I’ll help now.”
I tried to stop the bleeding using cotton wool and improvised means that the conductors had, applying cold to the bridge of the nose. But this had no effect – everything was soaked in blood. The bleeding did not stop for about 20 minutes.
I tried to calm the child down and began to think about what to do next. I asked the flight attendants for a first aid kit and found ampoules of adrenaline there. Having opened two ampoules, I soaked two cotton pads with the solution and inserted them deep into the child’s nose. After a couple of minutes, I saw that the blood had stopped,” AiF Krasnoyarsk quotes Mirzoev as saying.
The child came to his senses. As it turned out, the boy had undergone surgery to remove his adenoids the day before, which probably caused the bleeding.

Novosibirsk Lokomotiv defeated Moscow MSTU in the match of the 18th round of the Russian Volleyball Championship.

In the Women’s Super League, Minsk in the away match of the 17th round defeated the Zarechye-Odintsovo team with a score of 3-2 (15:25, 22:25, 25:21, 25:15, 15:7).

Volleyball players of St. Petersburg “Zenith” beat “Nova” and won their fifth victory in a row in the Super League
St. Petersburg “Zenith” defeated “Nova” from Novokuybyshevsk in the match of the 18th round of the Russian Volleyball Championship.
The meeting in St. Petersburg ended with a score of 3–2 (25:17, 25:21, 19:25, 20:25, 15:13). Zenit extended its winning streak in the Super League to five matches.
In other matches of the day, Zenit Kazan beat Krasnoyarsk Yenisey at home – 3-1 (25:18, 25:20, 25:27, 25:20), the Dynamo-LO club (Sosnovy Bor) defeated Kemerovo Kuzbass at home – 3-0 (25:15, 25:19, 25:20).
The leader in the table is Zenit Kazan (16 wins, 45 points), Zenit from St. Petersburg (14 wins, 43 points) is second.
