Russian volleyball player Alexey Nalobin, who played for Hekimoglu last season, recalled how he survived the earthquake in Turkey, noting that there was great mourning in the country.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred in Turkey on the night of February 6. The earthquake was recognized as the most powerful in Turkey since 1939.
— There was great mourning. And this did not happen overnight, because for a long time no one knew the exact number of victims – they only increased throughout the week. This slightly smoothed out that terrifying effect. In general, the Turks themselves have adapted to the situation; for them this is no longer something supernatural. As I understand it, this is the case. The only question is how you will react to this. If you get involved in this, you can travel a little. Happened? Yes, but people live on. There’s no getting around this.
We are in Hatay [одна из провинций в Турции] were supposed to go to an away match next week. And the local team was playing away that day. Then they dragged out the match for five sets and on the way home – 30 minutes before arrival – an earthquake occurred. We played five sets and survived. If three had played and this had happened, no one knows what could have happened next,” Nalobina is quoted as saying by “Championship.”
At the end of the season, Hekimoglu finished in tenth place in the Turkish Championship.
