Volleyball players from five US collegiate teams refused to play matches against a club with a transgender member.

The University of Nevada women’s volleyball team, after a vote among players, decided to withdraw from a college league match against San Jose due to the presence of a transgender person on the opponent’s roster.

The game was supposed to take place on October 26. Previously, teams from the universities of Boise, Wyoming, Utah and Southern Utah abandoned matches against San Jose. The San Jose team features transgender Blair Fleming, who has previously been seen throwing balls at opponents’ faces during matches.

— We, the University of Nevada, Reno women’s volleyball team, are losing their match against San Jose State University and stand in solidarity with the volleyball teams of Southern Utah University, Boise State University, the University of Wyoming and the University of Utah. We demand that our right to safety and fair competition on the site be respected. “We refuse to participate in any match that encourages injustice towards female athletes,” the Nevada volleyball players said in a statement, as quoted by OutKick.

Following this, the University of Nevada also issued a statement. “The players’ decision and statement were made independently and without consultation with the university or athletic department. The players’ decision also does not reflect the position of the university. The University intends to play the match as scheduled and players may elect not to participate in the match on competition day. No player will be subject to any team disciplinary action for his decision not to participate in the match,” the educational institution emphasized.

Previously, three teams were given a forfeit for not participating in the match, and another match was listed as cancelled.
