Bosnian international defender Amar Dedic has transferred from Portuguese club Benfica to Newcastle United for 35.9 million euros, Benfica announced on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old right-back signed a five-year contract until 2031 with Newcastle, where he reunites with German manager Matthias Jaissle.

Dedic turned 24 on the day of the transfer announcement. He completed the move to England just one year after joining Lisbon-based Benfica from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.
Financial details and sell-on clauses
Benfica informed the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) of the deal in an official corporate filing. Publicly traded sports societies in Portugal are required to disclose financial terms of major transfers to the market regulator.
The Portuguese club stated that it will retain a 17.94% share of any future capital gains if Newcastle later sells Dedic. Intermediary service fees for the transaction accounted for 10% of the deal.
Under the terms of the agreement, Newcastle will hold back 5% of the transfer fee under FIFA solidarity mechanism rules. The money will be distributed to the clubs that contributed to Dedic's development during his youth career.
Salzburg will also receive 15% of the capital gains generated by the sale to Newcastle. That percentage will be calculated after deducting Dedic's initial acquisition cost and the retained solidarity fee.
Reunion with manager Matthias Jaissle
The move to Newcastle reunites Dedic with Matthias Jaissle, who recently took over as head coach of the Premier League club. The pair previously worked together for two seasons at Salzburg during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.
According to a statement released on Newcastle's official website, Jaissle also coached Dedic at FC Liefering before taking charge of Salzburg, spanning a period from 2021 to 2023.
Dedic said that the opportunity to work with Jaissle again was a major factor in his decision to move to England. He noted that the two know each other well and that Jaissle understands what he can contribute on the pitch.
The defender added that he felt honored to join Newcastle and looked forward to playing in the English top flight at St. James' Park. He described every match at the stadium as a special occasion with a fantastic atmosphere and said he was eager to get started.
Career history and background
Dedic was born in Austria and completed his entire youth development in the country. He began his senior career within the Red Bull system, playing on loan at Liefering and Wolfsberger AC while under contract at Salzburg.
In the second half of the 2024/25 season, Salzburg sent Dedic on loan to French Ligue 1 club Marseille. Benfica then signed the right-back in the summer of 2025 for a fee of around 10 million euros.
During his single season in Portugal, Dedic made 46 official appearances for Benfica across all competitions and scored one goal. He had already played three matches for the club at the start of the current 2026/27 season before completing his move to Newcastle.
