(New York) Anthony Rizzo will remain with the New York Yankees, signing a two-year, $40 million contract.
The 33-year-old first baseman will earn $17 million in each of the next two seasons.
The contract also includes an optional clause at the team’s discretion. If the Yankees exercise it, Rizzo will receive 17 million in 2025, otherwise, they will have to pay him the sum of 6 million in the form of a buyout.
Rizzo had backed out of his previous pact with the Yankees, leaving out a $16 million salary he would receive in 2023.

Rizzo has also been given a limited non-trade clause, which will allow him to submit a list of his teams, annually, to which he cannot be traded without their approval.
Since joining the New York team at the 2021 trade deadline, Rizzo has provided the Yankees with a powerful left-handed hitter who took advantage of the tight fence near Yankee Stadium’s right field boundary line.
In 2022, Rizzo recorded a . 224 batting average with 75 RBI and 32 home runs, a total he reached for the fourth time in his career.
Although the Yankees finished first in the major leagues with 254 home runs, only 77 were hit by left-handed hitters.
Meetings with Judge
The deal signed with Rizzo is the first major deal for the Yankees since the start of the offseason. The Yankees are still hoping to sign outfielder Aaron Judge to a contract.
In that regard, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner met face-to-face with the ref to make sure the power hitter and free agent knew how much the team cares about him.
“I think he wants to be a Yankee. I think we have something good here,” Steinbrenner said Tuesday during a 30-minute session with reporters ahead of the announcement of the Rizzo deal.
The judge rejected an offer from the Yankees before the season opener that would have netted him $213.5 million between 2023 and 2029. Steinbrenner says he agreed with general manager Brian Cashman’s decision to make the offer public because he thought the information would leak.
Steinbrenner said further compromises will not delay the Yankees in their negotiations with the judge.
“We know where we are and I can tell you this is not going to stop us,” said Steinbrenner.
Judge set an American League record with 62 home runs and tied for first in the major leagues with 131 RBIs. AHL MVP favorite, the judge said his preference is to stay with the Yankees.
Steinbrenner had a one-on-one meeting with the judge and was involved in two or three other meetings with the right fielder and others.
“I wanted him to know how I felt if there was – what’s the word I’m looking for?” – some lack of clarity on his part – ambiguity. 🇧🇷
