(New York) Paul Goldschmidt, first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge were winners of the Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player award on Thursday night.
Goldschmidt, who received 22 of 30 first-place votes at the Nationals, won the honor for the first time in his career after coming close on a few occasions.
“It’s a great honor, but it’s not just about me,” Goldschmidt said during his MLB Network interview. There are so many people who have helped me. 🇧🇷
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado finished second overall, having received seven first place votes.

Goldschmidt’s Cardinals teammate Nolan Arenado finished third, having been named first in the poll once.
Meanwhile, Judge received the honor after hitting 62 home runs to break Roger Maris’ 1961 American record of 61.
He easily edged out Los Angeles Angels pitcher and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani with 28 first-place votes. Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros finished third.
“It’s hard to describe,” said the judge. It’s an incredible moment. There was a lot of hard work before we got to this point. 🇧🇷
The judge acknowledged that he felt “extremely nervous” on the eve of the announcement.
“You never want to assume anything,” he expressed.
Goldschmidt, 35, hit . 317 with 35 home runs and 115 RBIs this season. He led the Nationals with a . 578 power average and a . 981 attendance plus power average.
Goldschmidt also had 41 doubles, scored 106 points and had a . 404 base average.

A seven-time All-Star selection and four-time Golden Glove winner, Goldschmidt finished second in the National Most Valuable Player polls in 2013 and 2015 and ranked third in 2017. He wore the Arizona colors three times. Diamondback .
Machado hit . 298 with 32 homers, 102 RBIs, 37 doubles and 100 runs scored. He helped the Padres make the playoffs and advance to the National Championship Series.

Ohtani, however, had the best two-seed season in Major League history for the Angels, who went abysmal 73-89.
The Japanese went 15-9 with a 2.33 ERA and 219 strikeouts in 166 innings and 28 starts. At bat, he batted . 273 with 34 long balls and 95 RBIs.
Alvarez finished the campaign batting . 306 with 37 home runs and 97 RBIs.
