On a cold October night, Johan Rojas sped toward the warning track, turned around, made a perfectly timed leap to catch the ball and crashed into the fence, eliciting screams of delight from the spectators gathered at Citizens Bank Park.
Not bad for a guy who has only been playing in the major leagues for three months.
The Philadelphia Phillies defensive wizard is one of the few rookies who have made a significant impact over the course of the playoffs thus far, along with Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll and Texas Rangers prospects Evan Carter and Josh Jung. The rookie’s playoff performance is simply the logical continuation of one of the best regular seasons in major league history for first-year players.
And that’s just the latest example of rookie players excelling in October. Two of the last three American League Championship Series MVPs — Randy Arozarena in 2020 and Jeremy Pena in 2022 — were rookies. Pena also received World Series MVP honors.
Rojas, 23, is best known for his defensive play, and his catch to Ronald Acuna Jr. allowed the Phillies to maintain a 3-1 lead in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Oct. 12. The Pennsylvania team eliminated the Atlanta Braves and reached the National Championship Series.
“This kid is full of talent,” admitted Phillies manager Rob Thomson. He’s a good athlete; he shines in the outfield. I was sure he would get it.
“He is a great addition to our team,” continued Thomson. This is true even if he doesn’t generate anything on offense. He still had some good hits. And if he doesn’t do anything at the plate, his play on defense contributes to the team’s success. »

Corbin Carroll, also 23, is one of the favorites to win the National Rookie of the Year title, after hitting 25 long balls and committing 54 steals.
In turn, Carroll, also 23 years old, is one of the favorites to win the title of best National rookie after hitting 25 long balls and committing 54 steals. The All-Star was unfazed by the pressure in his first playoff appearance, batting .333 with two home runs, two stolen bases and six RBIs in seven games.
He allowed the Dbacks to beat the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers in the National Division Series and reach the championship series. The Arizona team had never accomplished this since the 2007 campaign.
“From an adrenaline standpoint, I would say it’s a lot like the regular season, maybe a little more intense,” Carroll said. For some reason, I have to admit that it didn’t affect me. »
The Dbacks will obviously need Carroll’s flashes if they want to advance to the World Series. The Phillies lead the National Championship Series 2-0 after crushing them 10-0 on Tuesday night.
Then there’s Jung and Carter, who have allowed the Rangers to field one of the most formidable lineups in Major League Baseball. Jung, 25, was among the favorites for the American Most Outstanding Rookie award before fracturing his left thumb in early August – leading to a several-week absence.
In turn, Carter, 21, has given the Rangers a huge boost since his September 8 recall. He hit .306 with five long balls at the end of the regular season and continued his momentum into the postseason. Carter has a .350 average so far with a .536 fielding percentage.
“We are all impressed with these two young players; how they behave, how they handle the pressure of crucial games, mentioned Rangers coach Bruce Bochy. Nothing has changed in them. I love their focus. They are not afraid of anything.
“They want to be on the ground,” he added. They want to be in the heat of the action. Is obvious. »
