After a stage victory in the Tour de France and a recent second place in the Arctic Race of Norway, Hugo Houle could have built on his successes during the rest of what is already the best season of his career. But there will be no rest for the warrior.
First, next week’s Quebec and Montreal Cycling Grands Prix are close to his heart, especially since they are resuming after two cancellations due to the health context.
Secondly, his team, Israel-Premier Tech (IPT), desperately needs points to avoid relegation to the second division after a year of bad luck and little misery.
“We have to perform in Montreal, otherwise we will be in trouble,” agreed the Quebec cyclist in the middle of an interview Thursday noon in a restaurant in Old Montreal.

” It is clear, clean and precise. If we don’t score points here, it becomes complicated. We are at home, we have sponsors from here. The team under pressure is definitely us. There is no photo. You have to deliver. Time flies. »
The Canadian-Israeli formation arrives in Quebec with an A+ workforce of which Houle is a part. On a personal level, the pressure is relative. In his first season in the blue and white colours, the ex-Astana member exceeded expectations.
First considered an exemplary team player, the 31-year-old athlete has proven to be a leading scorer. He also ranks fifth in the IPT for UCI points amassed this year behind his friend Jakob Fuglsang, his compatriot Michael Woods, Italian finisher Giacomo Nizzolo and Australian veteran Simon Clarke, winner of the cobblestone stage on the last round.
With the exception of Woods, victim of another fall at the Vuelta ten days ago, they are all recruits for Israel-Premier Tech.

For my part, I did what I had to do. I can’t do more. I try to stay focused, to do the maximum. But it’s clear that the team is under a lot of pressure right now.
Hugo Houle
Building on the momentum of his historic stage success in Foix on July 19, the Monaco resident capitalized on his exceptional form by climbing to the second step of the podium in Norway in mid-August. He missed the yellow jersey by a handful of seconds at the end of the four stages.
Forced rest before the Grands Prix
After a period of rest, Houle thought he would restart the machine at the Bretagne Classic-Ouest France on Sunday, but gastroenteritis the day before the start left him instead.
“It was not planned that I be there, it was I who asked to go. Under the circumstances, I made the best decision because I needed to recover. Of course I would have liked to do this race in Plouay to give me some references and shaker a bit the body. Maybe I wouldn’t have been at the top, but two weeks from the Grands Prix, that would have given me the little “oumpf” I need. »
In theory, he could have returned to competition at the new Maryland Cycling Classic on Sunday, but the team accepted that he skipped it to rest better.
Houle will instead indulge in a few sessions behind a motorcycle with his father to resume more sustained efforts this weekend.
Returning to Quebec on Monday, a first in a year, he moved in with his parents in Drummondville. In training, the native of Sainte-Perpétue, a village located about thirty kilometers away, rediscovers the “endless ranks of 15 kilometers with a good headwind”.
It’s fun to be on my routes, more relaxed, in Quebec. I take advantage of it. I don’t get the chance to be there often. It is a privilege to be able to spend a few days here.
Hugo Houle
Houle has not yet felt the effects of his new notoriety, claiming to go “incognito at the airport and at the grocery store”. “Sometimes people shout bravo to me [sur la route], but no more. »
He obviously has ambitions for the classics of Quebec (September 9) and Montreal (September 11), where he respectively ranked 15e and 28epersonal highs, in his last visit in 2019.
“I’m ready, confident, I just hope to have the legs I had three weeks ago. We’ll see if the rest has paid off. The training has been done and I’m more curious to see what I can do, especially in Montreal. The climb is a little longer and I perform better than before on the climb. I have nevertheless progressed in the last three years. »
Point Hunt
Houle will not last forever in the province. Less than three hours after the end of the Montreal event, he will board a plane for Brussels, where a series of one-day “small races” await him the following week, including the Grand Prix de Wallonie on Wednesday.
In all honesty, the cyclist is not very happy about it, considering that this express return to Europe to chase points, “is a bit like playing poker”.
Doing all these races at the end of the season is heavy for everyone. I’m doing my best, but I can’t change the team’s situation on my own. Everyone must be at an expected level so that together we can make a difference.
Hugo Houle
Houle will even have to conclude his season at the Japan Cup in mid-October.
“Normally, when you’ve had a good season like mine, you can relax and we’ll leave you alone. The scenario is different. This is true for all teams that are in danger. I do it willingly, but there’s a limit to what you can do. You must arrive fresh and ready for the races. At some point, like everyone else, I’m going to be tired too…”
Hoping that this dreaded blow of the pump does not occur before the fall of the evening on Sunday 11 on Mount Royal.
