Hugo Houle does not expect to participate in the Tour de France next year.
Unless there is a dramatic turnaround, Israel-Premier Tech (IPT) will not be able to climb into the top 18 WorldTour teams at the end of the 2020-2022 cycle, one of the criteria set by the International Cycling Union ( UCI) to remain in the first division for the following three years.
“It’s theoretically impossible for us to be WorldTour next year and we probably won’t have an invitation to the Tour de France in the current situation,” Houle coldly observed in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
It’s not the best, but what happened happened. Now we have to look ahead and rebuild for the next few years.

A WorldTour (WT) license ensures access to all events labeled as such, the most important of which is by far the Tour de France.

IPT points to 20e rank in the standings, nearly 2000 points from 18e place occupied by Cofidis. For reference, a victory at the Tour is worth 1000 points, while a success at the Montreal Grand Prix, another WT classic, is worth 500. The opportunities to race by the end of the season, October 16, are obviously becoming increasingly rare.
The two relegated formations and those of the second division (ProTeams) will compete for two automatic invitations for all competitions of the WT next year, based on their results in 2022.
A third team will receive a guaranteed place for the WorldTour one-day races. Israel-Premier Tech currently holds this position. It is 768 points behind Peter Sagan’s TotalEnergie, which is just above.
“It could be quite complicated”
Twenty-two teams are taking part in the Grande Boucle, which will start from the Spanish Basque Country in 2023. The 18 teams from the WT and the following two from 2022 are automatically invited. The ASO organizer therefore has the opportunity to invite two others, which are generally French squads or formations whose numbers are essential.
IPT, of Israeli and Canadian origin, is not likely to be among the first considered, especially since its owner, Sylvan Adams, has threatened, perhaps in jest, to launch his own Tour de France if ASO and the ‘UCI did not agree with his arguments.
In an interview with the specialized sites VeloNews and Cyclingnews, the patron from Quebec asked that the UCI expand the number of WT teams to 20 next year, citing a case of “force majeure” in the context of the pandemic. He even threatened the international federation with legal action if his request – and those of other endangered teams – were not heard.
On dry land, Houle is reduced to guesswork. “If you have a solid team, you are often invited, noted the winner of the 16e stage in Foix, July 19th. But for the Tour, it could be quite complicated. It’s always the event of the year for the pro teams. If you don’t go, it’s a bit much for the team and for me as an athlete. »
It’s definitely a step backwards if you don’t do the Tour. But hey, the UCI still has to decide and we’ll see what happens.

In an interview with cyclingnews, the general manager of Factor bicycles, Rob Gitelis, who equips and sponsors IPT, estimated that a participation in the Tour de France is equivalent to “nearly 50%” of the value of a year.
Without providing details on his future commitment to IPT, Gitelis recalled that the return on investment was certainly not the same without the Tour. Sponsors and riders could leave the boat in the event of relegation.
Despite this uncertainty, Houle heard from Adams and his friend Jean Bélanger, CEO and majority shareholder of Premier Tech, that the two men were there for the “long term”, regardless of status next year.
“Of course it raises questions and the situation is certainly not ideal,” admitted the soon-to-be 32-year-old cyclist, who has competed in the last four Grandes Boucles.
“I did not expect to find myself in this situation by signing with Israel-Premier Tech. But as they say, that’s what it is. »
Houle has a guaranteed contract until the end of 2024. “Personally, I believe in and I am loyal to the project led by people from back home. I can’t see myself leaving [l’équipe] when times are tough. We have to roll up our sleeves and show our DNA and that we are capable of being competitive. We have to bounce back, look in the mirror, assess our weaknesses and then try to change what went wrong. »
Hyperthyroidism?
Moreover, Houle understood why he was exhausted for the Quebec and Montreal Grands Prix, which he hastily abandoned less than two weeks ago. This sudden drop in diet is attributable to a problem with the thyroid gland, revealed tests taken on his return to Europe.
PHOTO DOMINICK GRAVEL, LA PRESSE ARCHIVES Hugo Houle had to retire early at the Quebec and Montreal Grands Prix.
“I’m still missing one or two test results to receive, but that’s probably what has been affecting me lately,” said the man who ended his season last week.
The endocrinologist made two assumptions, either hyperthyroidism or an autoimmune disease of the gland. In the first scenario, the inflammation could subside in two weeks with medication. In the other case, it would require longer-term care and follow-up.
“I understood that it was a rather complex problem. Normally, there are no complications, but it must be treated in order to avoid them. I’m still lucky because I didn’t have too strong symptoms. And that’s good, I have plenty of time to rest. »
If all goes according to plan, Houle will get back on his bike for the Criteriums Tour de France, mostly promotional events held in Singapore and Saitama, Japan, at the end of October.
