(Lausanne) The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday upheld the disqualification of Nairo Quintana from the 2022 Tour de France, after it was confirmed that opioids had been found in his body.
The CAS mentioned that its judges had invalidated Quintana’s appeal, and agreed with the International Cycling Union (UCI) which had so far estimated that the prohibited substance had ended up in his body for medical reasons, not of. sports doping. It will therefore not be suspended.
The court said the judges determined that “the ban on the use of tramadol decreed by the UCI was justified on medical grounds and not sports doping, and therefore within the scope of the UCI’s jurisdiction”.
Tramadol is a synthetic painkiller, and traces of this product were found in samples of the Colombian’s dried blood within a five-day interval in July, the UCI had already pointed out.

Quintana’s case is one of the first to be built around dried blood samples (DBS), a collection method that was authorized by the World Anti-Doping Agency last year.
Quintana had finished the last Tour de France in sixth place. He also finished second in the Grande Boucle in 2013 and 2015, each time behind Chris Froome. Quintana also won the Giro d’Italia in 2014.
