ROME – The Italian specialty world champion Filippo Ganna won the inaugural Tirreno-Adriatico time trial on Monday at Lido di Camaiore, beating two of the big favorites for the final victory, Remco Evenepoel (2nd) and Tadej Pogacar (3rd).
Ganna (Ineos), favorite for this 13.9 kilometer first stage consisting of a completely flat round trip on the Tuscan coast, did not miss the opportunity to put on the first azzurro leader’s jersey at home. He won 11 seconds ahead of the Belgian prodigy (Quick-Step) and 18 seconds over the double Slovenian winner of the Tour de France (UAE).
Pogacar, who achieved a good performance just two days after his demonstration on the gravel paths of the “Strade bianche” on Saturday, confirms that he intends to defend his crown in the “Race of the two seas”, which Evenepoel covets.
The 22-year-old Belgian, already impressive a few weeks ago in the time trial of the Tour of Algarve in Portugal, resisted Ganna on the first half of the course, with an unfavorable wind, turning with only 2 seconds of mid-term delay.
But the gap widened on the return, where the double time trial world champion showed off his power.
“In the first section there was a lot of headwind but after the turn the wind was favorable and I was able to push more,” said Ganna.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday, editor’s note), there is a stage for sprinters, we will see if I am able to defend the jersey. In the next few days, I will support the leaders of the team, Richard Carapaz (20th) and Richie Porte (25th) and if my legs allow it I will try to show myself again in front, ”added the Italian.
The French world champion Julian Alaphilippe, another favorite of the event, finished 32nd in this first stage, 58 seconds from the winner, two days after his spectacular fall during the “Strade bianche”.
This time is the only one on the program for this seven-stage race which continues until Sunday.
