Guillaume Boivin and his teammates from Israel – Premier Tech shuffled the cards during the first stage of the Catalonia cycling tour (171 kilometers), Monday, departure and arrival in Sant Feliu de Guixols. The only registered Quebecer took the 115and rank when he was part of a group of about fifteen riders who fell nearly 9 minutes behind the race leader.
In a long straight uphill straight finish, Australian Michael Matthews (BikeExchange – Jayco) finished first in the sprint. Not completely surprising, because Matthews excels on this type of terrain as he did during his victories at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec in 2018 and 2019. More recently, the stage winner in the three major national tours had finished at the foot from the Milan-San Remo podium, no later than last Saturday.
Simon Clarke, also from Australia, was Guillaume Boivin’s best teammate with a seventh place finish.
With about 80 kilometers to go, on leaving a city, the members of Israel – Premier Tech and those of BikeExchange – Jayco placed themselves at the head of the main peloton in preparation for the ascent of the Ganga pass (third category). At this point, a six-rider breakaway was leading by more than 3 minutes.
“My role for the week is to really take care of the guys and it was pretty windy all day. Once out of town, we drove as fast as we could and it exploded (in the peloton) and we found ourselves 20-25 ahead with our whole team,” explained Boivin.
The group forged a lead of about forty seconds before being swallowed up by the peloton about thirty kilometers later in this stage contested by cool and windy weather, in addition to the rain which fell at times.
“It was a really difficult day, but we can be happy with the way we raced. We don’t have the result at the end, but we will keep the same state of mind for the rest of the week and there are great things that will happen. It was fun to take the initiative with the team and still have a good race. »
The reigning Canadian champion had to set foot in Paris-Nice two weeks ago due to back pain. Monday’s race therefore marked his return to competition and Boivin confirms that he passed the test after rest and numerous treatments and physiotherapy sessions.
“It was still good. I’m happy and I hope it’s behind me. I was not supposed to do the Tour of Catalunya and I was supposed to be in Belgium instead, but after missing an important week (Paris-Nice) due to back pain, it was important to do this stage race to have the form needed to perform in the classics”, continued the one who should be back in Belgium to take part in the Tour of Flanders.
The second stage of the Tour of Catalonia will take place on Tuesday and it will stop in France on the 202 kilometer route between L’Escala and Perpignan.
