The Italian champion at the top: Elisa Longo Borghini won the second edition of Paris-Roubaix Women on Saturday alone, run over 124 kilometers, with a lead of around twenty seconds over the Belgian champion Lotte Kopecky.
Longo Borghini (30) took over from her Trek teammate, Briton Lizzie Deignan, who is taking a maternity break this year.
Under the sun contrasting with the rain and mud of last autumn, the Italian confirmed the superiority of her team represented by two elements (Brand, van Dijk) in the pursuit group.
Third last year on the Roubaix velodrome, Longo Borghini did not approach this second edition with full confidence. “I was thinking more of another girl on the team on the podium,” she said.
She also had a few words for her teammate and compatriot world champion, Elisa Balsamo, disqualified by the jury about forty kilometers from the finish for irregular return to the peloton (glued bottle and extended shelter behind car).
” That’s a shame. In the race, it happens that we lack lucidity but that’s the regulation”, admitted the Italian champion who went on the attack shortly after this sanction, at the exit of the cobblestones of Templeuve (North), at some 33 kilometers from the finish.
Bronze medalist twice at the Olympic Games (Rio then Tokyo), the Italian appreciated her victory, the first of her season, all the more as she has gone through difficult times in recent weeks.
“I was still on antibiotics not long ago,” explained Longo Borghini, who had chosen to ignore the last races (Amstel Gold Race Ladies, Flèche brabançonne) to best prepare for this Paris-Roubaix. Women.
For her part, Alison Jackson obtained the best Canadian result with a 13th position, 2 minutes 54 seconds behind Longo Borghini.
A first experience for Magdeleine Vallières-Mill
Magdeleine Vallières-Mill (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) wanted to take full advantage of her first participation in the legendary Paris-Roubaix race. After more than three hours of effort, the Quebecer crossed the finish line in 74th place, proud of her accomplishment.
“The atmosphere was really fun all day. I see that I still have to work a lot on my positioning before moving on to the next step. It was incredible to ride on the cobbles and to arrive in the velodrome where there is an incredible atmosphere. I’m not about to forget that race.
Even if she had hoped for a better result, Vallières-Mill continues to want to progress by participating in major races. She still says she is extremely proud to have been able to finish this grueling race within the time limits.
“The race was very chaotic, we all had good legs in the team to hope for a good result. We lack a bit of experience to be able to manage our races better. We were around sixty when we entered the cobblestones, there wasn’t a lot of space, it was a bit scary, but the experience is gradually coming back. »
“I would have liked to see my name a little higher on the results sheets, but I’m still very happy with my day. We stopped riding at a certain point in our group, I absolutely didn’t want to end up out of bounds. I wanted to take advantage of every second at the finish,” she added.
Also in action in Paris-Roubaix, Simone Boilard (St Michel – Auber93 WE) obtained the best result of the day by finishing 61st (+9 minutes 19 seconds), in the same time as Vallières-Mil. For her part, Gabrielle Pilote Fortin (Cofidis Women) finished after the scheduled time limit.
The Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek Segafredo) won Paris-Roubaix with a lead of 23 seconds over her closest pursuers, the Belgian Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) and the Dutch Lucinda Brand (Trek – Segafredo).
