James Piccoli (Israel – Premier Tech) started the Critérium du Dauphiné with a cold trying to see if he would get better as the stages progressed. Eight days later, the Montrealer passed the test. The day after his 27e place in a high mountain stage, the cyclist finished 26e on this same type of terrain, Sunday, in the eighth and final stage.
Piccoli concludes the first round of his training, at 53e rank in the general classification, (+33 minutes 29 seconds behind the winner Primoz Roglic [Jumbo-Visma]. This is a jump of 26 places in the ranking of the day before for the Quebecer after this day of 139 kilometers between Saint-Alban-Leysse and Plateau de Salaison.
Tired and happy, the athlete said he was happy about his first experience of this round on French roads.
“I can be satisfied because I was hoping to do well this weekend and finally the legs came back. We always want a little more, but I’m not far away and it’s good for morale and the next races,” explained Piccoli in an interview with Sportcom, adding that he had recovered well from Saturday’s stage.
“Recovering well is another good sign of form. I lacked a bit to stay on the last climb with the guys who were fighting for the general classification, but they are great champions who are preparing the Tour de France. I can therefore be satisfied with my effort”, continued the man who was able to hang on to the group of favorites during the first two kilometers of the 11.4 kilometers of the final ascent of the Plateau de Solaison.
Earlier, the 30-year-old rider had been dropped from the peloton on the descent of the Col de la Colombière, but he was able to reassemble the group which began the final climb a minute behind the race leader. The peloton led by the Jumbo-Visma made the junction 6.5 km from the line. A kilometer later, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) blew up the group to bring his teammate and yellow jersey Roglic into his wheel. Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroen) could not pick them up and remained twenty seconds behind.
A few minutes later, Vingegaard and Roglic crossed the finish hand in hand to celebrate the stage victory of the first and that of the lap of the second.
Even though his health hasn’t been there for the past week, Piccoli feels he’s moved up a ladder, having turned pro in his late twenties.
“There, in 2022, I feel really comfortable in the big World Tour races where I can help my teammates or try to take breakaways. This week, I saw that I was in the game and with a little more luck and health, I’m not far from playing for it to be interesting. I am confident,” he concluded.
Antoine Duchesne and Hugo Houle position their leader at the Tour de Suisse
On the other side of the Alps, in the first stage of the Tour de Suisse, Antoine Duchesne (Groupama – FDJ) and Hugo Houle (Israel – Premier Tech) had the same role to play in their respective teams, namely to position their leader at the foot of the last climb of the 178 kilometer course, starting and finishing in Küsnacht.
And the two former roommates did the job, as Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Jakob Fuglsang (Israel – Premier Tech) respectively finished seventh and thirteenth at the same time as the winner, Briton Stephen Williams (Bahrain – Victorious) .
“It’s a good first day. Despite the heat, the legs were good, but I got hot. Stefan Kung told us he felt good, so I put him on the bottom of the last bump and then climbed at my own pace. I’m very happy! said Duchesne, 77e of the day (+6 minutes 22 seconds).
The other rider protected by Groupama-FDJ, Thibaut Pinot, reached the finish in 35e place 51 seconds behind. This does not mean that the team will bet everything on Küng from Monday.
“I think we’re going to stay focused on the stages and try not to waste any more time on Tibo for the weekend which promises to be very tough,” added Duchesne.
In the formation of Houle, we were delighted to see Fuglsang go on the attack in the last five kilometers.
“The focus is on Jakob for the general classification. He performed well last year and normally at this time of year he is in very good condition, so he is our number one target this week,” recalled the Sainte-Perpétue athlete, 39.e (+1 minute 19 seconds) to cross the line.
“For me, it went well and I was there to support him until the last climb. I got knocked out, but I’m satisfied with my work and my feelings at the start of the Tour de Suisse. It was a good start for us today and Jakob showed he was strong in the final. »
The peloton remains in Küsnacht to start towards Aesch (198 kilometers) on Monday.
ZLM tower
Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) completed his hat trick at the fifth and final stage of the Tour ZLM, in the Netherlands. The Dutchman won his third stage victory in the sprint ahead of the Dane Alexander Salby (Riwal).
He concludes the round with the leader’s jersey, that of the best in points and that of the best young person
Nickolas Zukowsky (Human Powered Health) is 82e (+7 minutes 40 seconds) of the day and concludes the round at 50e rank (+10 minutes 1 second).
