The seventh stage of the Tour de Suisse was one of rejoicing for the Groupama-FDJ formation, of which Antoine Duchesne is a member. Member of the breakaway of the day, his French teammate Thibaut Pinot attacked in the final ascent on Saturday to slip away to a solo victory.
Groupama-FDJ took part in this race with one man less after the retirement of Frenchman Quentin Pacher, who tested positive for COVID-19, as has been the case for several other runners since the start of the week. .
On the last climb, Thibaut Pinot distanced the Spaniard Oscar Rodriguez (Movistar, +25 seconds) and the Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan, +38 seconds) to win.
“It was a great day! We absolutely wanted to place Thibaut in the breakaway. We had to control the entire descending valley as well as possible to ensure that we always started again and arrived at the first pass in a position to be able to get out,” explained Duchesne.

“Israel – Premier Tech didn’t want to let us go, but we really insisted. Near the foot of the pass, I had to roll a big blow to bring Thibaut close to the breakaway. He managed to finish the job wonderfully,” he added.
In addition, the Swiss Sébastien Reichenbach finished ninth on Saturday (+2 minutes 9 seconds), which makes him climb to sixth place in the provisional general classification with only one stage to go. His compatriot Stefan Küng is just behind in the general standings.
Antoine Duchesne meanwhile finished in 42e place during the seventh stage (+14 minutes 20 seconds) and climbs three places overall to find himself 45e.
Fuglsang now third
Despite the hard work of Quebecer Hugo Houle and the determination of the entire Israel-Premier Tech squad, Dane Jakob Fuglsang was unable to keep the yellow jersey at the end of this seventh stage.
Fuglsang crossed the finish line in seventh place 1 minute 48 seconds behind Thibaut Pinot and he had to give up the leader’s jersey to Colombian Sergio Higuita (BORA – hansgrohe), who finished fourth on Saturday (+1 minute 19 seconds).
“We can’t say it was a bad day, the form was there and it was decided on the last climb. The whole team did a good job today (Saturday). I stayed as long as possible with Jakob and I am very satisfied with my performance throughout the Tour,” said Houle, 21.e of the day (+4 minutes 2 seconds).
Fugslang therefore slipped two places in the provisional general classification to find himself third. The Dane is still at the height of the race, he who is only 19 seconds from the lead.
The eighth and final stage of the Tour de Suisse will be contested against the clock on a 25.6 kilometer circuit in the streets of Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein.
“I’m going to go all out to test myself. There’s not much at stake for me tomorrow, but I’m going for fun. Everything is possible for Jakob, it’s the legs that will do the talking. We hope he can keep his place on the podium, and so much the better if he climbs a bit,” concluded Houle.
Olivia Baril aims for the general classification
The women’s Tour de Suisse, made up of four stages, started on Saturday with a 46-kilometre race in Vaduz. Quebecer Olivia Baril, from the Valcar — Travel & Service team, crossed the finish line with a group of 15 cyclists. She ranked 13e50 seconds behind the winner, the Dutch Lucinda Brand (Trek-Segafredo)
Brand beat German Clara Koppenburg (Cofidis) and Dutch Pauliena Rooijakkers in the sprint to win.
“It was going really fast and it was really difficult, an hour at high speed. We did not succeed in our team strategy because it was driving hard and it was attacking all the time. I’m happy because I didn’t want to waste time with the other climbers,” said Olivia Baril, who is aiming for a victory in the general classification of this event.
A race against the clock will be held on Sunday over 25.6 kilometers. Baril will try to stay in good shape for the next two stages, where she hopes to stand out.
