(Montreal) Olivia Baril (Valcar – Travel & Service) and Magdeleine Vallières-Mill (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) were at the start of the prologue time trial of the Women’s Giro d’Italia on Thursday. The two Quebecers are not only taking part in the Giro for the first time in their careers, but it is also the longest event in which they will have taken part, with nine stages scheduled for the next few days.
“I’m really happy to be able to start the Giro for the first time. There are going to be some very intense races and that will give me good preparation for the Tour de France which will follow next. It’s the first time I’ve done such a long Tour,” said Baril from the start.
“It’s the longest race I’ve done in my life, I can’t wait to see how my body will react to this effort. I knew ten days ago that I was going to participate in the Tour, I had taken some time off before resuming training in a more intense way and I believe I am ready, ”added Vallières-Mill.
Although Baril doesn’t want to have too many expectations for the Giro, some observers have been impressed with her start to the season and believe she could be among the favorites for the event.

“I am here to learn and progress. I don’t want to set my goals too high, but I’ve seen on social media that some people put me in the top 10, it’s encouraging, but I want to take the time to enjoy it and make some better than I can. I’m optimistic ! launched Baril.
The Rouyn-Noranda cyclist will also want to take advantage of the experience of her entire team to achieve as much success as possible in Italy.
“I am surrounded by several teammates and a sports director who have experience in the Tour of Italy. I am part of an Italian team that has almost always participated in the Giro, it will certainly be positive for me. »
The observation is the same for Magdeleine Vallières-Mill while several of her teammates have already participated in the Tour, an advantage on which she will certainly want to capitalize.
“I don’t yet know exactly my role within the team for the Giro, I will wait for the meetings to be able to set myself objectives. Leitizia Borghesi won a stage of the Tour in 2019 and three other of my teammates have already participated in the Giro, there is a lot of experience in our training, it will certainly pay off, ”argued the 20-year-old athlete.
In the time trial on Thursday, Baril finished in 52e rank (+30 seconds) while Vallières-Mill ranked 81e (+41 seconds) in the streets of Cagliari.
“It was really windy today. It was a very flat course and you had to push from start to finish. I’m happy that the time trial is behind us. We have some great stages waiting for us from the first days,” explained Baril.
“It went well today, we didn’t want to go too hard to save our legs for the next stages. We were going slowly in the turns. So overall everything went as planned,” concluded Vallières-Mill.
American Kristen Faulkner (Bike Exchange – Jayco) finished in first place today, just ahead of her Australian teammate Georgia Baker (+4 seconds). The Italian Elisa Balsamo (Trek – Segafredo) completes the top-3 (+6 seconds).
The first stage of the Tour will take place on Friday and will run over 106.5 kilometers between Villasimius and Tortoli.
