(Copenhagen) Michael Woods has two very clear objectives for the first week of the Tour de France: “not to crash and waste time”.
Last year, the Ontarian fell on the first stage, which potentially cost him a victory later in the Tour, he believes. He had gotten a little scattered fighting for the best climber’s polka dot jersey, finally won by Tadej Pogačar, and maintaining an interest in the general classification.
This time, his mission is clear: win a stage, period.
“Winning a stage here is one of my career goals,” Woods said on the sidelines of the Israel-Premier Tech press conference, where he shared the stage with teammates Chris Froome and Jakob Fuglsang, Thursday after- midday.
“I believe it is possible. Last year I finished third in a stage [au Grand-Bornand] and I think that because of my crash, I was not 100% in this race. »

Starting this Friday, Michael Woods will participate in his third Tour de France.
I have missed other opportunities in the past due to falls. I know that if I stay on my bike, I have a chance of winning a stage. So I hope it will be this year.

It won’t be easy. The day before, Froome had reminded him that he had fallen at least once on each of his big laps.
“It’s my case too. I believe that almost 80% of the peloton will crash in this race. Everyone knows that there is a chance of it happening in complicated stages like Roubaix [mercredi]. If it rains, it will be disgusting! »
Lose time… to earn more
The first week in Denmark and northern France promises to be particularly tricky. By wasting time as he anticipates, Woods will be able to slip into breakaways more easily afterwards. His first target is the seventh stage which ends at the top of the Planche des Belles Filles.
The big mountain stages, in the second and third weeks, could also smile on him.
“I also showed that I was capable of winning a stage that does not end at the top, like at the Vuelta in 2020,” he said. Even in a transition stage, I therefore have a chance. In this team, we have several riders who can win. It helps me because we have several cards to play. »
Hampered by injuries and illness in the middle of the season, the father of two children aged 2 and a half and 11 months considers his form to be as good as last year at the same date, or even better. He has just won the Route d’Occitanie, his first victory in a stage race.
The Fourth Musketeer
With his teammates Hugo Houle and Guillaume Boivin and with Antoine Duchesne, who plays for Groupama-FDJ, Woods will therefore be one of four Canadians in the Tour de France, a historic summit.
Now, the big question, relayed by readers: should this Francophile from Ottawa be considered a Quebecer?
Woods, who resides in Andorra but rents a house in Chelsea, responded with this plea:
“It’s thanks to Quebec that I started my career, with sponsors like Sylvan [Adams, propriétaire d’Israel-Premier Tech], but also Louis Garneau who helped me when I started. »

I’m not totally bilingual, but in my heart, I love Quebec. It is my favorite province in Canada.

“When I come back with my family, I know that it’s in Quebec that I’m going to settle. I’m thinking of Gatineau Park, where I do my training. We are so lucky to have these landscapes and this geography. I can’t say I’m from Quebec, but I’m proud to be from Quebec. »
The nickname given to him by his Quebec friends in the peloton speaks for itself: Michel Dubois…
