(Sonderborg) Around the time Dylan Groenewegen was winning the third stage of the Tour de France in Sonderborg, a shootout broke out in a large shopping center in Copenhagen, 300 kilometers to the west, on Sunday afternoon.
The drama took place one kilometer from the congress center where the Tour had set up its permanent presence in anticipation of the big departure in the Danish capital on Friday.
When the runners returned to France by plane in the evening, everyone was unaware of the extent of the tragedy.
“There are several injured (3) and we now know that there are several dead (3)”, declared the chief inspector of the police of Copenhagen, during a press conference. A 22-year-old Dane was arrested at the scene. The motives for the attack remain unknown, but the hypothesis of terrorism is not ruled out.

Enough to throw a veil over the celebration that was the passage of the biggest cycling race, which aroused a fervor that never wavered for three days.

The Tour de France has shown its “compassion”. “The Tour is particularly shocked and saddened by the tragedy that has just struck Copenhagen,” said the organizing company (ASO) in the early evening, in a statement relayed by AFP.
“Its inhabitants had given the runners one of the most fantastic welcomes in history, forging deep bonds with all the followers. The entire Tour caravan offers its most sincere condolences to the victims and their families,” added ASO.
Dutchman Groenewegen’s victory, by a gut on the yellow jersey Wout van Aert, was his fifth on the Tour, but his first since a dramatic accident with his compatriot Fabio Jakobsen in the 2020 Tour of Poland. Eve brought this sad memory back into the news.

Groenewegen had sent the second into a barricade in a descending false flat. The brutal shock had caused serious facial injuries to Jakobsen, who had been close to death.
Subject to death threats in his country, Groenewegen had to ask for police protection.
Set aside by his former team Jumbo Visma and then suspended for nine months by the International Cycling Union (UCI), he took time to regain his mastery in large mass sprints.
“It’s been a long road,” admitted the 29-year-old Dutchman, who apologized for his gesture.
“Physically, the return was not difficult, but mentally, of course, it was,” said Groenewegen, moved to have been able to meet his father, who will follow him during the three weeks of the Tour.
Today at Australia’s BikeExchange, the very muscular sprinter made his way alongside van Aert and Peter Sagan (4e), throwing his bike in extremis on the line. The Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin) completed the podium, also missing out on victory.

Despite his beautiful yellow jersey still on his shoulders, van Aert seemed more unhappy than anything else in front of the journalists. The Belgian has increased his lead to seven seconds over Yves Lampaert and yet he leaves Denmark with the green tunic also on points.
“I force myself a little to be satisfied. I had the dream of the yellow jersey for a long time and the green jersey is one of the main objectives of my year, that’s what guided my preparation. But I also like to win races. Today, I really came close, it gives mixed feelings. »
Second for the third time in a row, van Aert is sorry to be subscribed to second place (Worlds, Olympics, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix), a curious situation for a champion of this stature.
While the runners slept in northern France, several followers returned to Copenhagen to spend the night near the airport. Three miles away, freeway exits for Field’s Mall were still blocked by police trucks.

Not on the grass
The American Quinn Simmons (Trek) did a great cyclocrossman act by rolling on the lawn for a few tens of meters to reposition himself in the peloton. Less impressed, the UCI marshals fined him 500 CHF (around C$673) and penalized him 20 seconds overall and 40 points in the standings for the green jersey. The use of sidewalks, paths or bike paths is prohibited by regulation.
Beware of waste
Six riders received a fine of 500 CHF (approximately C$673) and a penalty of 25 UCI ranking points for throwing waste outside the designated waste areas. Wout van Aert was in the group. Be careful, because a second offense in the same event would earn him a one-minute penalty…
