MORZINE, France – At the foot of the Grandes Alpes, the Tour de France peloton regained strength on Monday in Haute-Savoie after nine days of racing which clarified the hierarchy behind the yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar, more than ever favorite to succeed him.
Two dangers out of the race for Pogacar :
The Slovenian, author of a faultless since leaving Copenhagen on July 1, must take into account his opponents but also two additional risks independent of the race.
The COVID, which eliminated the Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen on Saturday, deprived him of a valuable teammate for the plain stages, the sector of the race which can prove to be the most tricky for the yellow jersey. Like the whole peloton, Pogacar was negative for the COVID-19 detection test carried out by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on Sunday evening at the end of the 9th stage. But the new wave of the coronavirus, in full resurgence in France, always leaves hovering a sword of Damocles.
“We are very careful, we hope to stay safe,” assured the leader of the Tour. But, according to the formula of David Gaudu, fifth in the Tour, “we are not safe from anything”. The risk is scary, adds the first Frenchman in the ranking, “you have to live with it and try to ignore it”.
Another risk identified for the new “cannibal” of the peloton, who is never as comfortable as in the difficult weather conditions, the weather forecast announces very hot weather for the week to come. Often beyond 30 degrees in the valleys and up to 38 degrees next Sunday, near Carcassonne.
Some “brutal” to come :
In the immediate future, Pogacar is planning for the two major meetings in the Alps, after the smooth recovery on Tuesday on the road to Megève. The Granon pass (Wednesday) then the Alpe d’Huez pass (Thursday) form the two parts of a perfect diptych for a climber of his kind, dominating last year in the various summit finishes and author of a raid in the Pyrenean days.
“Both stages are very tough,” analyzed the yellow jersey in response to a question about the most important stage. “The Granon is brutal and there is also the Galibier that day, a very long and high climb in altitude. But I think that Alpe d’Huez, preceded by the Croix-de-Fer, is the queen stage. »
With five historic ascents labeled “out of category” (including the Galibier by its two slopes 24 hours apart), the alpine menu promises to be more than substantial. Undoubtedly decisive for most candidates for the podium or the final victory, in the case of Pogacar and his Danish dolphin Jonas Vingegaard.
Towards a duel in the mountains :
Pointed at only 39 seconds, Vingegaard did more than resist the gluttonous Slovenian who tried to make the difference at all times. Winner of two stages (Longwy, the Planche des Belles Filles) and third in Lausanne, Pogacar accumulated 18 seconds of bonuses compared to Vingegaard. From there to see a form of concern in relation to the Dane of the Jumbo team, the step would be too important to take, rather a desire to put pressure on his opponent at the same time as an always useful precaution.
“Jonas is very strong, we are going to fight, but there are other riders who are not far in the standings. The gaps are not big enough for it to come down to a battle between him and me, ”said Pogacar, almost always relaxed and smiling at the start and finish of stages. His apparent resistance to stress, in the style of athletics legend Usain Bolt, is an added bonus in a three-week race, a physical and also mental test.
