After igniting his public in Denmark, where he was on a perpetual breakaway in his polka dot jersey, Magnus Cort Nielsen finally holds his stage victory at the Tour de France in 2022.
The Dane from EF Education-EasyPost won by the narrowest of margins after a memorable uphill sprint in Megève on Tuesday during a 10e stage interrupted by demonstrators. Tadej Pogačar (UAE) kept his yellow jersey by a handful of seconds, reluctantly… or not.
Cort Nielsen got the better of Australian Nick Schultz (BikeExchange), whom he jumped to the wire after a chaotic last kilometer after a group of 10 survivors of the breakaway.
“When it came back together in the final stretch, I saw a kind of podium in the corner with the sign of the Tour de France. I said to myself: this one is mine now, no matter the price. »
In a breakaway over more than 600 km since the start of the Tour in Copenhagen, Cort Nielsen won his second stage victory after a first success in Carcassonne in 2018.
“For a runner like me, it can’t be bigger,” said the 29-year-old athlete. That’s what I do: chasing stages in races like this. The Tour is the best. I won one on my first. I then made several without success. »
With will and after several attempts, it’s incredible to do it again.

Spanish veteran Luis León Sánchez (Bahrain), who had isolated himself in the last three kilometers, found the energy to start the 300m sprint, but he had to settle for third place.
Alberto Bettiol flew on the flat with 43 km to go, which allowed his teammate Cort Nielsen to save himself until the last 18 km climb towards the altiport of Megève.
The Italian from EF, the rest of the breakaway as well as the peloton had to set foot due to a demonstration by an ecological collective who managed to block the road and light smoke bombs. The neutralization lasted about ten minutes, and the riders left with the same gaps at the time of the forced stop.
The day after the first real day of rest, the morning started badly for Pogačar. The UAE Slovenian has learned that his New Zealand teammate George Bennett, one of his strong allies in the mountains, was to leave the Tour after testing positive for COVID-19. The double winner of the Tour avoided the worst since his main lieutenant, the Polish Rafal Majka, also positive, was able to continue due to his lower viral load.
Reduced to six riders, UAE did not seem to wish to sift the composition of the breakaway, a bit like last week. This indolence led to a furious first two hours, during which attempts rocketed everywhere.
“When you have big teams like Ineos or Lotto who are able to control the start of the race and filter, and who play for victories, it quickly becomes padlocked and the breakaway leaves quickly”, noted Antoine Duchesne, who remained with its leader David Gaudu (Groupama).
“There, everyone knows that UAE does not control. They are behind and let the race go. They take risks. »

Swell and IPT
Hugo Houle, Jakob Fuglsang and even Chris Froome have tried their hand at Israel-Premier Tech (IPT). In vain.
“I put a lot of effort into the breakaway, but I missed it a bit,” said Houle, who rode the last climb at his own pace with his compatriots Duchesne and Michael Woods.
It was rather Simon Clarke, winner of the cobblestone stage, who managed to take off for IPT. The Australian was, however, among the first dropped on the final ascent.
The breakaway of 18 riders gave itself a priority of more than 9 minutes, which allowed the German Lennard Kämna (Bora) to dream of the yellow jersey.
Pogačar and UAE seemed willing to let the leader’s tunic slip away… until they started rolling towards Megève. They eased off halfway, happy with the gap, but other teams of overall favorites picked up the slack. So much so that the Slovenian, who still sprinted to the finish, kept the yellow for 11 seconds.

“We picked up our pace for the first part of the climb and then slowed down a bit,” explained Pogačar. Other teams showed up and they were all over the road. It rubbed a little and in the end, we keep the jersey on for a few seconds. »
Guillaume Boivin, the other Canadian from IPT, joined the gruppetto.
On the eve of the first big alpine stage, with arrival at the top of the Col du Granon, “the hardest of the Tour”, according to Duchesne, who recognized it, the UAE will have decisions to make. Pogačar holds a priority of 11 seconds over Kämna and 39 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo).
“Every effort, every day, it leaves traces,” said Houle, now 39e to the general. “We will see how it will evolve, but it is certain that Ineos and Jumbo will attack at some point. »
Cowboys on board
Antoine Duchesne took control of the music on the Groupama-FDJ bus and in the room he shares with Thibaut Pinot. It was therefore Les Cowboys Fringants who motivated the troops on their way to Morzine on Tuesday morning. The day before, a day of rest, the Quebecer and the Frenchman rolled side by side to the sound of America is crying. “Thibaut has always loved this song. He knows the chorus and some lyrics. The proof is this video published on the social networks of the French formation.
