LONGWY, France – Tadej Pogacar won the sixth stage of the Tour de France on Thursday and took the leader’s yellow jersey at the same time.
The Slovenian, champion of the Grande Boucle in 2020 and 2021, sprang in the sprint towards the finish line to win a first stage this month, ahead of David Gaudu and Michael Matthews. He sits at the top of the general classification, four seconds ahead of the American Neilson Powless.
“Each victory is even better than the previous one, said Pogacar in a television interview. It was extremely difficult on the last climb, very chaotic and all. I guess I had enough legs to push all the way. »
The leader at the dawn of the 220 km stage which linked Belgium to the north of France and which was at the heart of a breakaway, Wout Van Aert, was swallowed up by the peloton about 11 km from the finish. . The Belgian was never able to hang on to the train of riders, and finished more than seven minutes from the winner.
Pogacar said he believed van Aert could take the win on his own, but he pointed to the “tremendous work” of his teammates to put him in a position to fight for victory in the Côte des Religieuses.
The Slovenian did not grab the yellow jersey so early in the Tour de France: he had put it on during the 20th stage in 2020, and during the eighth last year.
Pogacar played down the importance of rising to the top of the general classification so quickly in the competition.
“I’m super happy to have won. Everything else is just a bonus, ”he added.
Ontarian Michael Woods was the best representative of the maple leaf during the sixth stage by virtue of his 20th place, five seconds behind Pogacar. Quebecers Hugo Houle of Sainte-Perpétue, Guillaume Boivin of Montreal and Antoine Duchesne of Saguenay followed at 69th, 114th and 137th, respectively.
In the cumulative standings, Woods is now 42nd at 5:37 behind Pogacar. Houle is in 43rd place, nine seconds behind, while Boivin and Duchesne follow in 120th and 140th places, in order.
