Quebec cyclist Hugo Houle signed the first Canadian victory in 34 years at the Tour de France by winning the 16e stage, Tuesday.
The only other Canadian to win a stage in the Tour de France is Steve Bauer, who won the first stage in 1988. Bauer is the sporting director of Israel-Premier Tech, the team Houle pedals for.
Houle thus climbs on the podium for the second time in this Tour de France, he who took third place in the 13e stage.
Houle was more than a minute ahead of Frenchman Valentin Madouas, Canadian Michael Woods and American Matteo Jorgenson.
The Quebecer emerged about forty kilometers from the finish, before Péguère. Behind him, Jorgenson, in pursuit, crashed on the descent and lost any chance of coming back.
Houle, 31, signed the first international success of his professional career, which began in 2013.
“This victory is for my brother,” said Houle, the line crossed, showing the small cross he wears around his neck in memory of his brother who died accidentally at the age of 19 on December 21, 2012 after being mowed down by a drunk driver while jogging.
Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo) kept the leader’s yellow jersey after this Ariège start, at the start of the Pyrenean stages.
Vingegaard gave nothing to his Slovenian rival, outgoing winner Tadej Pogacar, who unsuccessfully attacked him three times.
The main loser of the day is the Frenchman Romain Bardet, who started to let go in the port of Lers, one of the two first category passes on the program. He was definitively distanced in the wall of Péguère, conceded more than three minutes to his rivals and lost his fourth place in the general classification.
