BRUGES, Belgium – Filippo Ganna remains master of the clock: the Italian deprived the Belgian Wout van Aert of gold in the time trial of the World Cycling Championships, Sunday in Bruges, at the opening of the competitions.
If Belgium took two places on the podium, with third place for Remco Evenepoel, the (large) crowd of spectators heard the Italian anthem after the finish of the race. To salute the performance of Ganna, winner at an average of 54.37 km/h on the ultra-flat course traced from Knokke-Heist and 43.3 kilometers long.
The Piedmontese giant (1.93m), who now has 16 road victories at the age of 25, won for the first time in a time trial exceeding 40 kilometers. In his effort management, he kept up the strength to do better than van Aert, who was 6 seconds ahead of him at the first checkpoint (km 13.8) but less than a second at the next survey (km 33 ,3).
At the finish, Ganna pushed the Belgian back to 5 seconds, a noticeably smaller gap than last year when he won the road title at the Italian circuit of Imola (26 seconds over 31.7 km). Evenepoel, long holder of the best time, lost for his part by 43 seconds.
Fair play, van Aert, who had just completed his course, briefly congratulated his rival, the current reference in terms of time trials. Although he only took 5th place in the time trial of the Tokyo Olympics won by the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (absent in Bruges), on a significantly more selective course, Ganna excelled on the track in Japan, taking the team from Italy in pursuit of the gold medal and the 4 kilometer world record.
Hugo Houle did well with a 20th place. The athlete from Sainte-Perpétue completed the course in 50 minutes 50 seconds.
Van Aert accuses the blow
“My condition has improved a lot since last week,” said Ganna, ahead of Switzerland’s Stefan Küng at the recent European Championships in Trento, Italy. “I did a short training course at altitude to defend this jersey which I hold dear. I hope to get a third one next year. »
Unlike Evenepoel, who declared himself satisfied (“you have to remember where I came from, a little over a year after my fall in the Tour of Lombardy”, he recalled), van Aert acknowledged the blow: “I am very disappointed. It’s the silver medal too many when I wanted the gold. I can of course be satisfied with my time and my performance but it’s disappointing to fail so close. »
Second last year in the time trial and road race at the Worlds, the Belgian added a new silver medal to his collection which also includes a second place at the end of July at the Tokyo Olympics. His next meeting is set for Sunday, the day of the road race, which he will start as the favorite: “With the incredible support of the public, it will be fantastic. »
If the Dane Kasper Asgreen came close to the podium (at 2 sec), Küng remained at a distance after having competed in the first part (5th at 1 min 06 sec). As for the winner of the Tour de France, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, who had dominated the first lap of the Grande Boucle, he finished significantly further (10th at 1 min 52 sec).
On the French side, Rémi Cavagna, 7th last year, fell this time to 14th place (at 1 min 59 sec), ten days after his 9th place at the European Championships.
