Cyclist Karol-Ann Canuel has always loved the individual time trial. Monday, on the 30.3 kilometer course separating the Belgian cities of Knokke-Heist and Bruges, the Gatinoise set off on a starting ramp for the last time in her career and concluded the World Championships event at the 13th rank.
The athlete who will end his athletic career on Saturday, after the road race, wanted to live this moment to the full.
“I was a little nervous and I still wanted a good time to be proud of myself at the end. I think it went well in general and I’m still happy. I thought about it a bit at the end of the race, saying to myself: “Come on, these are the last pedal strokes and you can do it! “It was still hard and it was a demanding time trial,” explained the one who completed the course at an average speed of 46.755 km/h.
On this flat course, but windy from the back, the 33-year-old athlete fell 2 minutes 48 seconds behind the winner, the Dutchwoman Ellen Van Dijk (36 min 05 s).
This is the second world title for Van Dijk after that of 2013. She beat the Swiss Marlen Reusser (+10 s), silver medalist for the second year in a row, and the Dutch Annemiek Van Vleuten (+24 s ), reigning Olympic champion.
For a short time, Canuel even sat in a virtual podium seat before being dislodged by the eventual winner.
“It was fun and it doesn’t happen often! »
The Quebecer was the second best Canadian of the day, as she was beaten by 14 seconds by her compatriot Leah Kirchmann, who finished in 11th place.
“This year, we had times that are similar, but she always has the advantage over me though! laughed Canuel, whose best result in this event was sixth at the 2014 worlds, a result she had equaled in the road race in 2018.
Earlier today, in the men’s under-23 event, Raphaël Parisella ranked 32nd (+2 min) and Francis Juneau 46th (+2 min 45 s) in a race where Dane Johan Price-Pejtersen picked up the rainbow jersey.
More than a decade at the highest level
Karol-Ann Canuel came to the pro peloton in a turbulent time. She was expected as the great Canadian hope of women’s cycling following the hasty exit of Geneviève Jeanson, excluded for a positive doping test.
Unlike that of the fallen junior world champion, the career of the athlete from Amos will have taken place under the sign of stability. She joined French outfit Vienne-Futuroscope in 2010 until 2014, then moved to Specialized-lululemon, which became Velocio-SRAM the following year.
She won two world titles in the team time trial with these formations, which caught the eye of the leaders of the Dutch team Boels-Dolmans who recruited her in 2016 where she will confirm her role as a teammate until this season, under the name of SD Worx.
In addition to supporting her teammates, she again climbed to the top step of the team time trial podium in 2016 and won silver in 2017 and 2018 before seeing this event disappear from the program of the World Championships.
Karol-Ann Canuel could not have wished for a better place to fully experience his last race. She also intends to take advantage of it on Saturday on roads she knows well in this cradle of cycling.
“I think it’s going to be really intense and fun to race in Flanders. It will be a great way to end.”
