Fenerbahce 1-1 Lyon: Greenwood cancels out Openda header

Olympique Lyonnais earned a 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce SK in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Tuesday.

Belgian forward Lois Openda opened the scoring for the French side with a header five minutes before half-time, before Mason Greenwood equalised for the Turkish hosts early in the second period.

The result leaves the tie balanced ahead of the deciding second leg in France next week, with both teams competing for a place in the league phase of Europe's premier club competition.

Lyon came into the fixture facing a intense atmosphere in Istanbul. Ahead of kick-off, midfielder Corentin Tolisso warned that Fenerbahce possessed squad quality worthy of the Champions League following summer reinforcements, adding that Lyon were fully focused on securing qualification.

Head coach Paulo Fonseca saw his side display composure during the opening exchanges, absorbing pressure while keeping Fenerbahce quiet in attack.

Openda heads Lyon into first-half lead

Lyon broke the deadlock in the 40th minute following a sustained spell of pressure in the Fenerbahce penalty area. Tolisso initially attempted to find Openda, and although the Turkish defense cleared the ball, Lyon quickly regained possession.

American midfielder Tanner Tessmann picked up the ball on the right side of the box and passed to Tolisso, who overlapped to deliver a precise cross. Openda reacted quickly to direct a powerful header past Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson.

The goal rewarded Lyon for a disciplined first-half performance, sending the visitors into the interval with a 1-0 advantage after stifling the home crowd.

Greenwood strikes back after the break

Fenerbahce needed just two minutes of the second half to restore parity. French midfielder N'Golo Kante won back possession in midfield and found Kerem Akturkoglu, who shifted the ball to Greenwood on the right side of the penalty area.

Greenwood took on Lyon defender Abner, cut inside onto his left foot, and unleashed a curling shot that beat goalkeeper Dominik Greif to make it 1-1 in the 47th minute.

The Turkish side pressed for a second goal as the half progressed. In the 63rd minute, full-back Archie Brown made a long run down the flank past Ernest Nuamah before delivering a dangerous cross to Vedat Muriqi, whose header was saved by Greif.

Brown created another opportunity in the 72nd minute with a cross towards Akturkoglu, but the Turkish winger could only direct a weak header towards goal.

Late chances and second-leg decisive clash

Both managers turned to their benches in the closing stages. Fenerbahce replaced Akturkoglu and Talisca with former Paris Saint-Germain attacker Marco Asensio and Dorgeles Nene in the 73rd minute. Fonseca responded two minutes later by introducing Boudache and Clinton Mata for Nuamah and Justin Kluivert.

Fenerbahce came closest to finding a winner in the 81st minute. Nene cut in from the left wing and struck a long-range shot that beat Greif but rebounded off the post.

Kante received a yellow card in the 82nd minute for pulling down Boudache, while Fenerbahce defender Milan Skriniar was booked two minutes later.

Fenerbahce brought on Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku for Muriqi in the 83rd minute, while Lyon handed a debut to Danish midfielder Mads Bidstrup, who replaced Morton in the 86th minute.

Lyon threatened late on when Tolisso struck a powerful shot from distance in the 88th minute, forcing Ederson into a save to preserve the draw through four minutes of stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, Openda said the draw represented a good result for Lyon, though he felt the team had chances to score a second goal. Openda said the performance demonstrated that Lyon did not fear their opponent, while acknowledging that the tie remains 50-50 heading into the return leg at the Groupama Stadium next Wednesday at 21:00, where home supporters will push the team forward.
