FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres missed training with permission to finalize a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain after the French club submitted an improved second bid. Manager Hansi Flick and the Barcelona board excused the Valencia-born player from practice and team travel to avoid injury risks while negotiations continue.
The economic agreement between the two clubs is at an advanced stage and could be signed in the coming hours after weeks of negotiations. Paris Saint-Germain submitted a new proposal between 50 million and 55 million euros after Barcelona rejected an initial offer of 40 million euros. The transfer is expected to close for a fee near 50 million euros.
Torres, who was born in Foios, reached an agreement on personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain for a four-year contract. If the deal closes at 50 million euros, Barcelona will receive less than the amount paid to acquire him from Manchester City in January 2022. The Spanish club originally signed him for 55 million euros plus 10 million euros in add-ons, all of which have been met over his time at the club to bring the total cost to 65 million euros.
Contract Clause and Financial Terms
A key reason Barcelona is willing to sell the forward involves a contractual clause linked to his current agreement, which expires in 2027. Under the terms of his contract, Barcelona would be required to pay an additional bonus of about 8 million euros to Manchester City if Torres renews his deal.
According to reports from The Athletic, Barcelona is reluctant to pay the 8 million euro bonus, which alongside a new contract would make keeping him too expensive. Unless Torres accepted a major salary reduction, staying at the club was considered impossible, leading Barcelona to allow his departure.
Torres personally initiated the transfer by calling Flick directly several days ago to officially communicate his desire to leave Barcelona and sign with Paris Saint-Germain. Official club negotiations began immediately after the German manager learned first-hand of the player's intentions.
Performance Records and Squad Role
The Spanish international does not feel loved or valued at Barcelona, making the Parisian offer irresistible. Despite taking advantage of a physical decline in Robert Lewandowski last season, Torres was projected to remain an important squad member without securing a guaranteed starting place.
During the previous campaign, Torres tied Marcus Rashford as the forward with the most appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, playing 49 matches. He finished as the team's joint second-highest goalscorer with 21 goals, matching Raphael Dias Raphinha and trailing only Lamine Yamal, who scored 24 goals.
Since joining from Manchester City during the 2021-22 winter transfer window, Torres has scored 65 goals and delivered 23 assists in 207 official matches for Barcelona. However, he has not established himself as an undisputed starter at Camp Nou.
Salary Package Offered by Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain has offered Torres a four-year deal with a salary suitable for a star player. The attacker currently earns 10 million euros per year at Barcelona, which equals 833,000 euros per month, 194,000 euros per week, or 28,000 euros per day.
The French club is prepared to increase his earnings to 14 million euros annually, providing a significant financial raise that helped convince the forward to make the move.
