FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres is set to join Paris Saint-Germain in a transfer worth €55 million after the clubs reached an agreement. Speculation about the 26-year-old striker's future began during the World Cup, despite him being a key player for coach Hansi Flick last season. Financial issues at Barcelona made a move elsewhere increasingly likely.
Torres joined Barcelona from Manchester City in January 2022 for €55 million plus €10 million in bonuses. According to a report by The Athletic, Manchester City included a clause requiring Barcelona to pay another payment of about €8 million if Torres extended his contract. Barcelona would have needed to give the player a raise alongside that fee, which nobody at the club wanted to do.
With his contract expiring next summer, this transfer window is Barcelona's last chance to receive a fee for the player. From January 1, the forward could negotiate with other clubs for a contract starting July 1. PSG targeted Torres because they could lose Bradley Barcola this summer to Liverpool. Two-time Champions League winners PSG did not wait to strengthen their squad, having had a €40 million bid rejected by Barcelona a few days ago.
Transfer fee and deal completion
Foreign media report that Barcelona will accept PSG's offer of €50 million plus €5 million in bonuses. The deal is expected to be finalized this week, following Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup match between PSG and Aston Villa. Spanish journalists report that Torres is certain of the move and will not resume training with Flick's team.
Torres played 207 matches for Barcelona, scoring 65 goals and providing 23 assists. He was also the hero of the last World Cup final, scoring the only goal in Spain's victory over Argentina.
