Russian-born Montrealer Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr. are close to an agreement for a light-heavyweight unification duel that would be presented this summer in New York, reports ESPN.

But for the deal to be sealed, Smith (28-3, 22 KOs) must first come to an agreement with his promoter Star Boxing. The WBO champion wants to obtain US$1.8 million to face the holder of the WBC and IBF titles, while his promoter offers him $1.5 million.

” [Beterbiev] is the one I want,” Smith said after his most recent knockout win over Steven Geffrard on Jan. 15. I’m ready to face anyone. »

Against Beterviev (17-0, 17 KOs), Smith would clearly be the underdog. The protege of Marc Ramsay is indeed the only active champion to have recorded all his victories before the limit. He scored his last win against ex-champ Marcus Browne on December 17 at the Bell Centre.
