Medvedev: “There is no need to go back to the old format of the Russian Cup”

Zenit CEO Alexander Medvedev evaluated the current format of the Cup of Russia.

The format provided for the League Cup has been retained as part of the Russian Cup, which gives this competition a special flavor and meaning. Because the model is very interesting. Beyond the path RPLwhere they play according to the Champions model, there is the Via delle Regioni.

The second strong point is that even after finishing third in the group or losing a game in the playoffs, there are still chances of reaching the final. This idea was born from eSports, so it will be very interesting. At the same time, the financial side of the Cup has increased significantly. This allows clubs to do more than recover costs. If there are spectators starting from the 1/4 final, they will also have a good economic result. Therefore, I repeat, the tournament will be interesting. Our first game with Fakel promises to be the same.

As long as we don’t play in European competitions, this is a situation. When we hope to return, we will have to think. But it seems to me that it will not be necessary to go back to the old format, but to use what we will see this season, plus what else it proposes to do. I think together we will find a solution that will be both spectacular and profitable.

INFANTINO: “If there was no FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino He commented on World Cup ticket prices, saying they reflected “absolutely insane” demand for next summer’s tournament:

“We have six to seven million tickets and in 15 days we received 150 million ticket requests. So every day we have 10 million requests. This shows how strong the World Cup is.”

FIFA has sold just 44 million tickets in almost 100 years of the World Cup. So we were able to sell tickets for the 300th anniversary of the World Cup in two weeks. Just imagine. “This is absolutely crazy.”

Infantino also noted that funds from ticket sales would be reinvested into world football, but did not specify a specific amount:

“The important thing is that the revenue from this goes back into football around the world. If it weren’t for FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world. Football exists thanks to the revenues we get from the World Cup, and we reinvest that into football around the world.”

Previously, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on FIFA to further reduce 2026 World Cup ticket prices.
