Atletico – Leverkusen 2: 2: Unthinkable end for the Spaniards with a missed penalty at 90 + 7 after the end of the game
Atletico won a penalty after the referee’s final whistle after a VAR check, but Lukas Hratetski saved Yannick Carrasco’s shot at 90+7 and after two more unsuccessful restart attempts, the 2-2 put the Spaniards out of the round of 16.
The final thriller in Madrid had no precedent, just like Atletico have no next in the Champions League! The “Rojiblancos” won a penalty… after the end of the game, after a VAR check, but Lukas Hratetski saved Yannick Carrasco’s attempt.
The two rebounds in the phase didn’t go into the net (a goal by Saul and a shot by Reinaldo that hit…Carrasco) and so on 2-2 opposite to Leverkusen for his 5th match day 2nd group let the Spaniards and Germans fight for third place and the Europa League.
The game at the “Metropolitano” started when the Germans froze the stands with Moussa Diaby’s goal after a mistake by the hosts. Her nervousness was visible in all her movements, but in the 22nd minute Yannick Carrasco equalized to make it 1-1 after a nice team effort and brought the field back to life.
The German reaction was similar to their first goal. A mistake outside the Atletico space and Callum Hudson-Odoi restored Leverkusen’s lead.
Diego Simeone brought Rodrigo de Paul and Saul to the break and Atletico’s image improved noticeably. The game shifted to the guest field and the hosts missed chances early on.
In the 50th minute, the Argentine midfielder justified his coach and equalized to make it 2-2, while Mateusz Kunia made Simeone’s next move. Xabi Alonso’s side caught up at the back to at least hold the draw that kept them alive in the Europa League.
Everything looked like a win, even if Atletico played from set pieces in the final minutes with Jan Oblak in attack (who had previously saved Diaby’s goal)!
The winning goal didn’t come and the referee blew the final whistle for the teams to go into the dressing room. He thought so, because Odilon Kosunu had made a hand that caught the attention of all the referees in the final phase when there was a foul from a corner.
As is his right, VAR informed the first referee and invited him to watch the VIDEO of the phase. Recognizing the hand, he took the final whistle back, conceded a penalty, but to no avail. Atlético’s three chances to score wasted and it remained 2-2 until the end.

Ilya Zabarny angers PSG fans
After PSG’s unexpected defeat against Sporting (1:2), the fans of the Parisian club exploded with anger. Although the European champion team controlled the game, they showed low efficiency in attack and mistakes in defense in the last minutes.
Fans have identified this summer’s new arrivals as the real culprit: the goalkeeper Lucas Knight and defender Ilya Zabarny. Chevalier was criticized for Luis Suarez’s pass to the centre, which brought the second goal, and Zabarny was criticized for the Ukrainian player’s poor play on the right wing of the defence, even though he played for only ten minutes.
Fans even dubbed them the “double maléfique” (“evil duo”) and demanded that the club reconsider its personnel decisions. PSG now have a chance to improve in the following matches to maintain their position in European competition.
