Riera: “My years at Asteras made me better as a player and as a person”

On the Asteras Tripolis podcast, Adrian Riera spoke in the best terms about his career at Arkades as he believes he has improved as a footballer and as a person.

Adrian Riera was the ‘guest’ of the week on the Asteras Tripolis podcast, with the Spanish midfielder looking back on his career in Spain but of course also on his course at Arkades, for which he is very grateful.

Details of what Adrian Riera said on the Asteras Tripoli podcast: I started playing football when I was very young, with friends. My father came to me at the age of five and asked me if I would be interested in going to an academy and of course my answer was yes. So I started playing in an academy, although back then I saw football more as a hobby, as a pastime, and never thought I would do it for a living. That came by the way. Until I was 14, 15 years old I played 5X5 courts, not 11v11 courts.

At the age of 15 I made the transition from 5v5 to 11v11 with the Murcia team. I think it was a turning point then because next year I had to make the most important decision of my life because they came from Levante and asked me to fight So one of my decisions was this and the other was to stay close to home, to my family, to continue to see it as a hobby. I chose Levante and the course showed that I probably made the right decision.

Difficult in those years because it was the first time that I left my homeland, my area. There were a lot of difficulties in the first four years, but then I started to enjoy football like I did when I was younger.

Up until then I was just playing football for fun. That affected my physical condition, because when you go to pro level, the requirements are different. My body type doesn’t help much in this part. I was left behind because I didn’t see the years I should have been working as professionally, so it was even harder for me. After those four years we said Levante started loaning me out to other teams for a year. It was a difficult situation, but it matured me. This allowed me to understand the requirements and learn to adapt to modern football.

As I began to immerse myself in the atmosphere of professional football, I started putting on some good performances and getting interest from a few teams. I was lucky that Villarreal were interested in me but before I went there I was having a hard time because I injured my knee and tore my cruciate ligament. However, it was another turning point for me because I didn’t put it down, it made me stronger physically but also mentally. I’m not as vulnerable as I was in years past.

The good thing about the case is that Villarreal didn’t back down and went ahead with the transfer and undertook the restoration. Something that obviously helped me a lot because the facilities are very good, but on the other hand it helped me psychologically because it was like being told that we trust you anyway. I needed this because I was wondering if I could play professional football again, I thought maybe it would bring me back and play locally again. Immediately after my injury I spent a month with my parents, we put it all down and decided to take it as a challenge and come back even stronger.

On the one hand, I was fortunate to be in Villarreal because they took care of me and I thank them for that. On the other hand, unfortunately, because I was only there for a year and was injured for six months. After that came the proposal from Asteras Tripoli and here I was.

When I signed my first professional contract, that’s the moment when you feel like you’re closer to the football pro, but at the same time you feel far away, because in my case in particular, it didn’t do me any good to sign in one at such a young age and that’s because I wasn’t mature enough to deal with it at the time. Luckily, I had people around me who helped me get through this sudden change in my life.

At the time I lacked a little humility to understand what was happening and it took me years to find and discover myself to come here. In some cases I wasn’t ready to deal with some situations. When I realized I wanted to continue doing that, came the injury part that took me even further back.

When I haven’t pursued a professional career in soccer, which I liked from a young age, I’m in university in the business administration department and I really like it and I think that after my career is over I will follow it. I want to thank the team of Asteras because from the first moment I came here they hugged me, helped me a lot and helped me a lot in a very important period of my life because when I turned 23 years old I had the Phase of exceeded “talent” and you are considered a normal footballer. All the years I’ve spent here have not only made me better as a footballer but also matured as a person and I’ll never forget that.“.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
