Italy v South Korea 2002, referee Byron Moreno attacked after new whistles

The famous Italy v South Korea 2002 World Cup referee Byron Moreno was attacked for his whistle at an amateur game in Ecuador.
The referee’s name Byron Moreno was written in the blackest colors of football history following his decisions in the 2002 World Cup round of 16 match between Italy and South Korea that led to the co-hosts’ qualification and unfair exclusion “squadra achura”.
The Ecuadorian referee retired in 2003 (and after several suspensions) but his whistles continued to cause tension in his face.
The 53-year-old was officiating an amateur league game in Guayaquil, where he lives, but after the game ended, a player pushed him from behind and threw him to the ground.
The rest of the players stepped in and prevented the worst for Moreno, who in recent years has been arrested in New York for possession of six kilograms of heroin, opened an academy for young referees and caused controversy on Ecuadorian television in the domestic league.

Otamendi: “Guardiola called me and asked how we won the World Cup after the 2-2 draw against France”

Argentina and France went head-to-head in the World Cup final, with the Albiceleste being crowned champions and Pep Guardiola calling Nicolas Otamendi to ask how they fared after the French equalised.
In what many consider to be the best final in the history of the World Cup on December 12, 2022, Argentina defeated France on penalties (4:2, 3:3 in regular time) and took the “scepter”.

“After the 2-0 win and the 2-2 draw, it was difficult to maintain the result. Pep Guardiola called me after the World Cup to congratulate me and asked me: ‘How we managed to have the mentality to win the World Cup while…’ we were 2-0 up and down 2-0. 2 draws”, The 35-year-old Benfica defender told Star+.

Conflict with Messi and bonuses for the 2022 World Cup. Scaloni could leave Argentina

After the final victory against Brazil in the 2026 World Cup qualifying match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni surprised fans by hinting that he could leave the national team soon, despite having a contract until mid-2026.
It was reported that the national team coach was tired of communicating with representatives of the Argentine Football Federation. First, they spent too long negotiating a new contract and now haven’t paid bonuses to the players and coaching staff for winning the 2022 World Cup.
Also, Argentine media talk about a “power conflict” between Lionel Messi and Scaloni, but both deny this.
Scaloni has gained huge popularity among fans because the team won the Copa America before the 2022 World Cup and is currently a confident leader in the 2026 World Cup qualifying group.
Even after the victorious World Cup, his mentor made it clear that he was tired of the last few stressful years.
“I just want to go home. It was a difficult time, I want to leave. I haven’t seen my family for a long time,” said Scaloni, who lives in Spain.
The association hopes Scaloni will not leave before the 2024 Copa America, which will be held in the USA in the summer.

Owen is still angry at Beckham for being sent off at the 1998 World Cup.

Michael Owen He can’t get over England’s defeat by Argentina in the round of 16 of the 1998 World Cup in France.
The former Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid player partly blames David Beckham for the incident. The then Manchester United midfielder and now Inter Miami owner received a straight red card and the team were left with ten men and Argentina progressed to a penalty shoot-out.
“First of all, I don’t think Beckham’s strike would be worth a red card, but that doesn’t matter. He made a mistake and it still bothers me even after all these years. Many players only play in one World Cup play-off in their career and Beckham made a huge mistake. I think he admitted it. You could argue that it contributed to our exit from the World Cup, so it’s no small thing,” Owen said.
