Russia will continue to protect the interests of Russian athletes in contacts with the IOC – Peskov

Russia will continue to protect the interests of Russian athletes, including in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

– As for relations with the IOC, in any case, of course, and the president has repeatedly spoken about this, we are all obliged, in contacts, including with the IOC, and with other organizations, to continue to protect the interests of our athletes, which, in fact, and is happening,” said Peskov, quoted by RIA Novosti.

The press secretary of Vladimir Putin also stressed that the head of state focused on the need to develop a system of domestic competitions with the participation of athletes from friendly countries.

– Here, it’s over, it’s better to ask our authorities. Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin is here. You can ask him this question. I can only say to this that at various events with the participation of the president… The topic of Russian sports was repeatedly discussed against the backdrop of the unprecedented sports restrictions that were introduced. The President emphasized the need to introduce a whole system of internal competitions, expanded competitions with the participation of other, friendly countries, Peskov added.

Metelya – about the possible admission of Russian biathletes to the Olympic Games: “We will be ready”

Victoria Metelya, live on Match TV, assessed the performance of Russian skiers at the World Cup in Davos (Switzerland) and spoke about the possible admission of Russian biathletes to the 2026 Olympic Games.

On Saturday, Saveliy Korostelev and Daria Nepryaeva failed to qualify for the freestyle sprint at the World Cup in Davos, but these results were enough to meet the qualification standard for the 2026 Olympics.

On Wednesday, the Russian Biathlon Union (RUB) filed a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge the exclusion of athletes from Russia from competing under the auspices of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). RBU President Viktor Maigurov reported that the organization will ask CAS to consider the issue under an accelerated procedure.

— How would you evaluate the performance of the Russians at the World Cup in Davos?

– Everything is fine, this is the first start. I wish the guys good luck: follow the intended path. I’m incredibly happy for them. We wrote off after admission, wished all the best, I’m rooting for the guys.

— How much do you believe that Russian biathletes will be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in January?

“We hope for the best, but things are much more difficult here in this regard, so I don’t really expect miracles; what will happen will happen.” In any case, we will be ready. Even if they don’t take me, I will be happy for our other athletes.

— If you have a chance to go to the Olympics, will you go?

“Of course, it’s not even discussed,” Metelya said on Match TV.

Metelya – about the mass start: “How can you be upset with third place if so many people came to support us”

Biathlete Victoria Metelya, on Match TV, noted the phenomenal support from fans during the 12 km mass start at the second stage of the Alfa-Bank Russian Cup in Tyumen.

The mass start took place on Sunday. Metelya took third place, 21.7 seconds behind the winner Kristina Reztsova and making one penalty. Second was Anastasia Grishina (+13 seconds, 0 misses).

— You threw a bouquet of flowers to the audience, isn’t it a pity?

– Of course not. I would give everything to the audience, look how many people there are. How can you be upset with third place if so many people came to support us? I didn’t hear the clatter of poles or the sound of skis, because there was such a shout here, such support. “It’s just phenomenal,” said the biathlete.

Later on Sunday, the men’s mass start will take place in Tyumen. Watch the live broadcast of the race from 11:50 on the Match TV channel, and the broadcast will also be available on the websites matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru.
