Canadian skater Ivanie Blondin had to settle for 13th place in the 1,500 meter event on Monday at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing.
Blondin (1:56.49) fell more than three seconds behind wave partner Irene Wust of the Netherlands (1:53.28), who was defending her Olympic title.
It was the fifth time that Wust, a long track legend, stood on the podium at the Olympics in this distance, she who also won a 12th career medal.
The podium was completed by Japan’s Miho Takagi, 44 hundredths behind Wust, and Wust’s compatriot Antoinette de Jong.
The other Canadian in the running, Maddison Pearman, set the 24th best time of the competition.
Having also competed in the 3000m event on the first day of competition (she finished 14th), Blondin’s busy Olympics are far from over yet.
She will compete in the 5,000 meters and the mass start – in which she is considered a medal hopeful – in addition to being a member of the team pursuit.
Blondin and her teammates Isabelle Weidemann, as well as Valérie Maltais, are possibly the most formidable team in Beijing, having won gold in each of the last three stages of the World Cup.
