Canada snagged its first gold medal from the Beijing Olympics on Day 3 thanks to Quebec snowboarder Max Parrot.

After winning silver in slopestyle at PyeongChang in 2018, Parrot had to battle cancer, but all of her resilience paid off on Monday. He finished on the top step of the podium thanks to a run of 90.96 points.

Parrot was accompanied on this same podium by his compatriot, the Canadian Mark McMorris. For the third time in a row at the Olympic Games, McMorris won a bronze medal in the slopestyle event.

Kim Boutin and ski jumping impress

After winning three medals at the PyeongChang Olympics, Kim Boutin managed to avoid the pitfalls to once again climb the podium in Beijing. Just like in 2018, the Quebecer won the bronze medal in the 500m event.

Moments after Boutin’s medal, the Canadian team finished third in the first mixed ski jumping event at the Olympic Games. MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes gave her teammates the bronze medal with a spectacular final jump.

A victory with a mask

After confusion over COVID-19 test results, players from Canada and the Russian Olympic Committee took to the rink wearing masks for their preliminary round meeting at the women’s hockey tournament.

If the Canadians were to evolve in these unusual conditions, the result was not surprising since they signed a third convincing victory at these Games with a victory of 6 to 1. Now let’s place the confrontation which will determine which team will finish first in Group A. On Monday night in Quebec, the Canadians will meet the Americans.

A historic medal

Canada won its first-ever Olympic medal in ski jumping with a third-place finish in the mixed team event Monday at the Beijing Games.

The foursome of Alexandria Loutitt, Matthew Soukup, Abigail Strate and Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes earned a cumulative score of 844.6 points. Slovenia escaped with the gold medal with a score of 1001.5, far ahead of the Russian Olympic Committee (890.3).

This bronze medal was made possible thanks to a spectacular leap by Boyd-Clowes, the last Canadian jumper to hit the springboard, which earned him a score of 128.1 points.

This is Canada’s sixth medal since the start of the Games. Four of them were acquired on Monday.

At the foot of the podium

Madeline Schizas continued her momentum for Canada in the figure skating team competition. After taking her team to the final with her performance in the short program, she finished the competition strong with her free program and Canada finished in fourth place.

Canadian James Crawford gave an excellent performance in the downhill alpine skiing event, finishing at the foot of the podium. Crawford was only seven hundredths of a second from a bronze medal.

The qualifying round for the Big Jump competition was dominated by Ontario’s Magan Oldham. She finished atop the standings with a jump of 80 points and another of 91.25 points. She will be accompanied in the final by Quebecer Olivia Asselin.

The day was more difficult for the mixed doubles curling team as Rachel Homan and John Morris lowered the flag in front of Italy to be removed from the semi-finals and see their competition come to an abrupt end. For her part, skater Ivanie Blondin had to settle for 13and position in the 1500m in long track speed skating.
