From a preview of the very likely women’s hockey gold medal game to Keegan Messing’s Games debut, there’s a lot of storyline unraveling at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday. of Beijing 2022.
Here are some events to follow at the Beijing Games on Tuesday, February 8:
High Hopes in Freestyle Skiing (9 p.m.)
17-year-old Olivia Asselin and 20-year-old Megan Oldham may command attention in their Olympic debuts.
The two freestyle skiers are likely to be in the high jump final on Tuesday, where they could stand on the podium, having recently won silver (for Oldham) and bronze (Asselin) in this discipline at the X Games winter in Aspen last month.
Canada-United States, 1st round (11:10 p.m.)
The likely gold medal game in women’s hockey between Canada and the United States will be previewed in the preliminary tournament. In six women’s hockey appearances at the Games, only once have the two teams failed to meet in the final, in 2006, when Canada beat Sweden.
As expected, the two powers are posting an immaculate record of 3-0 in the tournament before their confrontation.
In Pyeongchang 2018, the United States prevailed to end Canada’s four-game gold medal streak at the Olympics, something they will be sure to remember heading into this game.
Keegan Messing finally arrived (8:15 p.m.)
Canadian figure skating star Keegan Messing will finally begin his Olympic Games with the presentation of the men’s short program. Messing was unable to accompany the Canadian delegation after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the team’s flight from Vancouver to Beijing.
He arrived in the Chinese capital just in time for the start of the men’s singles competition on Monday after testing four times negative. Messing is the current Canadian champion and is ranked No. 6 in the world this season.
Hanyu’s Debut (8:15 p.m.)
Defending two-time Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu will also start his Olympic Games in the short program after arriving in Beijing on Sunday. Hanyu was mysteriously absent and his fans, the media and even his own teammates wondered where he was before the Games started.
That mystery is now out and the 27-year-old will be looking to become the first skater since Sweden’s Gillis Grafstrom in 1920, 1924 and 1928 to win three Olympic titles in a row. Additionally, Hanyu is attempting to become the first skater to successfully land a quadruple axel – considered the most difficult jump in figure skating – in official competition, by including it in his program.
