Canadian Scott Gow finished fifth in the 20 km individual biathlon event on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics.

The 31-year-old from Calgary missed just one target in all four shooting stations en route to a time of 49:53.0, one minute and five seconds behind the winner.

Gow, who will also take part in the sprint in two days, thus overtook several competitors better placed than him in the world ranking. His younger brother Christian also did well, with a 24th position.

As for Quebecer Jules Burnotte, he finished his work day in 36th place. The 25-year-old Sherbrooke resident is in his Olympic baptism, fifteen years after making his debut in the discipline.

The fourth representative of the maple leaf in the running, Adam Runnalls, completed the course with the 33rd best time, it is also his first Olympic adventure.

A total of 92 skiers took the start of this event.

It was Frenchman Quentin Fillon Maillet (48:47.4) who won the gold medal, the first won by France in Beijing, beating Belarusian Anton Smolski and Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bo by 14.8 seconds.

In the case of Fillon Maillet and Smolski, it is a first individual career medal at the Olympic Games.
