The Canadian team suffered a 4-2 loss in the group stage of the men’s hockey tournament on Saturday at the Beijing Olympics.
Mat Robinson got Canada off to a good start by scoring in the second minute, but USA captain Andy Miele fought back 70 seconds later.
With 1:16 to go in the opening round, Ben Meyers gave the Americans their first lead.
Coming back from intermission, young forward Brendan Brisson doubled the USA lead.
Corbin Knight was then in charge of restoring momentum to the Canadians by scoring from a shorthanded situation, late in the second.
But Kenny Agostino restored American priority by two goals in the seventh game of the final period.
The victory put the United States in an ideal position to secure a bye for the quarter-finals, which sits atop Group A.
Canada goaltender Eddie Pasquale had a pretty tough game, allowing four goals on 27 shots. Strauss Mann stopped 35 pucks in front of the American net.
“I think what hurt us was the second half of the first period,” said head coach Claude Julien. We started well and we had momentum before losing it. Same thing in the first half of the second; we were playing on our heels. We came out well in third, but their fourth goal hurt us. »
Julien, was behind the bench after joining the team on Thursday. The 61-year-old broke a rib and suffered a punctured lung in a sledding accident in which he hit a tree during the Canadiens’ training camp in Switzerland.
Julien was initially unable to travel to China, but then received permission. He watched Canada beat Germany 5-1 on Thursday.
Julien’s formation was somewhat unlucky, shooting twice at a post. Towards the end of the second period, defender Maxim Noreau thought he had tied the game 3-3 on the power play, but his powerful shot hit the crossbar.
“These are small details. We hit a post here and there with Noreau and (Mason) MacTavish. In hockey, if these things go your way, we may have a difference in the final score. These are things that happen, and at the end of the day, you have to bounce back tomorrow against China and finish strong,” he added.
Four years ago in Pyeongchang, Canada and the United States did not meet in the men’s competition.
The NHL’s decision to pull out of the Olympic tournament due to COVID-19 concerns has opened the door for a younger generation of players.
The first three picks of the last NHL draft were in action on Saturday. Defenseman Owen Power (1st, Buffalo Sabres) and forward Mason McTavish (3rd, Anaheim Ducks) wore the colors of Canada while forward Matty Beniers (2nd, Seattle Kraken) represented the United States.
We’ll see the Canadians in action Sunday morning at 8:10 a.m. (Quebec time) as part of a confrontation with the host country, China.
