Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier finished sixth in the rhythm dance program at the Beijing Olympics.
The couple who were crowned Canadian champions were undoubtedly as flamboyant as their orange outfit. With the music I guess That’s Why The Call It the Blues, the two skaters chained maneuvers and lifts in an impressive way. A few hesitations at the start of the program resulted in the judges awarding a score of 83.52.
Before the presentation of the free program, Gilles and Poirier are only four points behind the Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue who come in third place. The French Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron were faithful to their habits, that is to say dazzling with a harvest of 90.83 points for the first position.
They are followed by ROC athletes Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov who recorded 88.85 points.
First Canadian couple to have started in the competition, Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha showed a beautiful proof of expression under the rhythm of funkytown. The judges granted them the provisional second place after 12 pairs with a score of 72.59 which was more than enough to ensure their qualification for the rest of the program. They are 13th in the standings.
“I think that despite the stress, we were able to deliver a free performance if we wanted to,” mentioned Lajoie.
Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen did not miss their entry into these Olympic Games with a first program under the era of careless Whisper. Those who finished second at the Canadian Championships moved up to the provisional lead with the best score of the day after 15 pairs of skaters, with a score of 78.54. They come in eighth place at the end of the day.
The dance free program will take place Sunday evening at 8:15 p.m.
