The Canadians could once again have a podium opportunity in short track speed skating on Sunday at the Olympic Winter Games as the Canadian men’s hockey team wraps up the group stage.
Here are the events to watch in Beijing on Sunday, February 13:
The monobob makes its Olympic debut (8:30 p.m.)
The women’s monobob (bobsleigh) event makes its Olympic debut in Beijing and, after a series of practice runs, the official runs begin on Sunday.
Toronto’s Cynthia Appiah and Alberta’s Christine de Bruin represent Canada in this new Olympic event.
Halfway for curling teams (8:05 p.m. and 1:05 a.m.)
The teams of Brad Gushue and Jennifer Jones will participate in the sixth session of round robin curling, the halfway point.
The Canadians will face the United States, while their counterparts have an appointment with Switzerland.
Short Track Medal Opportunities (6 hrs)
Canada still has opportunities to win medals in short track speed skating.
The Canadians will be in Final A in the 3,000-metre relay at 6:44 a.m., headlined by Kim Boutin, the 500-metre bronze medalist in Beijing.
In addition, Steven Dubois, who won a silver medal in the 1,500 meters earlier at these Games, will try to add another medal, in the men’s 500 meters. Jordan Pierre-Gilles will also be there, in the same quarter wave at 6:09 a.m.
The men’s team concludes the group stage (8:10 a.m.)
After losing 4-2 to the United States, the Canadian men’s hockey team will end the group stage with a game against hosts China.
The team that finishes first in each of the three groups will automatically earn a spot in the quarter-finals, while the best formation among the second-tier teams will automatically earn their spot in the knockout phase.
The other eight teams that don’t earn an automatic spot in the quarter-finals will have to earn a spot there in the qualifying playoffs.
Canada is in Group A with the United States, Germany and China.
McDougall enters the track (8:56 a.m.)
Although not expected to be much of a threat, Alberta’s Brooklyn McDougall could cause another pleasant upset for Canada at the Beijing Games.
Competing in the women’s 500 meters of long track speed skating, McDougall has the potential for a podium-worthy performance if she is at her best.
The 23-year-old skater, who is competing in her first Olympics, won a silver medal in the 500 meters at the Four Continents Championships in 2020, so the talent is there.
