As freezing cold descended on Zhangjiakou, Scott Gow, Canada’s last torchbearer, sparkled as he took the field to sixth overall (+1 minute 56.3 seconds) ) of the 4×7.5 kilometer relay in biathlon at the Beijing Olympics.

This result becomes the best in the history of the Canadian relay at the Olympics, lowering the seventh place obtained in Sochi in 2014. A mark that makes Quebecer Jules Burnotte extremely proud.

“We are very satisfied, but we know that we could have perhaps gone for a little more. We have been excellent in the last World Cups. It’s rare that we finish in the top-6, so we welcome this result with a lot of pride. We have proven that Canada has its place here, it’s excellent for our sport,” said Burnotte, in an interview with Sportcom.
“Scott Gow is the star of the day. He was perfect in shooting and he was in good shape in skiing. It is largely thanks to him that we were able to finish sixth. We all worked hard, but Scott was fantastic. »

Burnotte was the third Canadian to start after watching teammates Adam Runnells and Christian Gow fall to 9th place. The Sherbrooke resident needed two extra bullets on his first shot, but he was able to keep his place in the provisional standings.

He then shone in standing shooting by being perfect, without having to resort to extra balls. Burnotte managed to gain a rank after this passage. Fatigue, however, took hold of him during the skiing sequences.

“I felt tired in skiing today (Tuesday), but I was very consistent on the shots. This is my fourth race in a week, I feel very tired. I didn’t want to let my teammates down, I think I’ve never tapped so deep into my energy reserve in my entire career,” added the Quebecer about his individual performances.

In first place since the very start of the event, the Russian Olympic Committee collapsed on the last rifle run by having to complete two penalty loops. This bad luck smiled on the Norwegians who took advantage of it to climb on the first step of the podium. The French (+27.4 seconds) were also able to get ahead of the ROC, who finished third (+45.3 seconds).

With his silver medal, the French Quentin Fillon Maillet won his fifth medal in Beijing, all that, in five events.

Burnotte will participate in a final event in Beijing with the 15 kilometer mass start to be held on Friday. The 25-year-old biathlete admits that he will benefit from a lot of rest to find the best possible shape for this event.

“I’m going to get a massage and after that it will be rest. The fatigue is present and I need to rest as much as possible for the next race”, he concluded.
