ZHANGJIAKOU, China – Canada’s Max Moffatt finished ninth in the freestyle skiing slopestyle final on Wednesday at the Beijing Olympics.

Moffatt, who is from Caledon, Ont., scored 70.40 points on his third run

American Alexander Hall won the gold medal with a first run of 90.01 points.

His compatriot Nick Goepper won the silver medal after a run of 86.48 points. Sweden’s Jesper Tjader won the bronze medal with a total of 85.35 points.

The Americans have now won six of the discipline’s nine Olympic medals since it made its Games debut in 2014. Goepper has three of those, having won silver in 2018 and bronze in 2014.

Switzerland’s Andri Ragettli, the leader after qualifying, had the opportunity to drag the three athletes down a rank on his third run, the last of the competition, but he missed a maneuver. Regettli settled for fourth position.

Moffatt is competing in his first career Games, but he is a winter X Games veteran. He won the silver medal in slopestyle at the X Games on January 23 in Aspen, Colorado.

Moffatt had recorded a 20th-place finish in the high jump event at the Beijing Games, which took place last week.
