In addition to his gold medal obtained in the relay in Beijing, Quebecer Charles Hamelin had another reason to smile following the Olympic Games on Monday.

Hamelin was inspired by one of his idols, Lewis Hamilton, for the design of his helmet which sought to resemble that of the Formula 1 driver at Mercedes. This touch did not escape the man who won seven Formula 1 world championships and the Briton wanted to highlight the Quebecer’s feat when he got his hands on a sixth Olympic medal.

“I love the helmet. Congratulations on all your successes in Beijing,” Hamilton said.

Hamelin was quick to respond to Hamilton’s Twitter post.

“I feel like a kid right now! Thanks very much! I am speechless, you are a king. Go get an eighth title, I’m behind you! I’ll watch, ”the 37-year-old skater then replied.

This gold medal in the 5000m relay in Beijing allowed Hamelin to overtake Marc Gagnon as the most decorated Canadian Olympian of the Winter Games for men. He has four gold medals, one silver and another bronze in his collection.
